.243 & H414

I'm loading up some 70 gr.bullets and using H414. I noticed that Hodgdon lists the max for this at 46.0 and the Lyman manual lists 49.0+ for 70 gr.... Just curious why there is such a disparity in listed max loadings. Any input would be helpful, I've only reloaded for a year or so, still learning.

Different rifles/barrels, powder lots, brass, primers. etc all play in the pressures. YMMV

Side note FWIW,
There were 7-8 of us that used the "Club Load" getting well under MOA accuracy.
243 Win
70 gr
39.0 grs IMR 4895

Work up but was a safe and very accurate load for everyone that used it.

I have been using H414 for a couple decades. It has changed over time. The old H414, I could load on average 2 or 3 grain more powder than the H414 i am using today. I only use magnum primers with it. in the lyman 49th it list the sierra 70gr HPBT #1505, with max loads of W760 at 47.3gr and H414 49gr max compressed using the rem 9 1/2 LR primer. If i was to load H414 up to the max 49gr I would expect to be over pressure. In my rifle using a rem 9 1/2M. I would start at 45gr and would expect to see consistant velocitys and accuracy near 47gr with flattened primers starting. I'm shooting Sierra 85gr HPBT with H414 They work better for me. Lyman data is bullet specific

JD338, do you know what kind of velocities you all are gettin' with that load? Thanks for the data should have my nosler bt's in Friday and lookin' for a good potion. I've got varget and H380. Was shootin' .22-250 a lot and decided to give it a break and brake out the old .243. I'll have to get me some 4895.

I sold my 243 several years ago and bought a NIB M700 Classic 257 Roberts. At the time I shot 243, I didn't have a chronograph but my SWAG is 3300-3350 fps. My longest kill with this load wad a woodchuck at 380 yds. Very accurate load in several rifles.

My first powder for 243Win was H414.Started at 42gr bumping up in half grains.I stopped at 44gr in my rifle because it grouped so well at that amount with the 7ogr NoslerBT.Went thru 3 #s of it,using WLR Mag primers from the start.

Tried Varget,IMR4895,and am currently shooting IMR 4064.All were solid performers.

JD338 nailed it with his statement on different rifles, barrels, etc. You may not get to max load before you get the performance you`re after.

Good Luck,
Mick

I really like H414 because it goes through the powder measure so nice(Im easy to please), but I was wondering why you would use magnum primers with it if your not shooting a magnum cartridge? Just wondering if Im missing out on a good idea!

Ball powders usually need a magnum primer for uniform ignition. Especially so in cold weather. However, I'm not really sure if that is necessary with the small charges in a .243 load. I thought about working with some H414 and the 85 gr. Sierra HPBT I like so much because the IMR stick powders (IMR-4350 and 4064) are a pain in the rear to throw charges with. However, I have ten thousand Federal 210 Match primers and really don't want to go primer shopping. In my researching this some say the 210M is consistently hot long enough to have perfect ignition even in cold weather with H414 and charges under 60 grains. Others say maybe not… I dunno. I guess if I weren’t so lazy I’d work up some loads and chronograph them. It’s a balmy 4* above zero right now…

I also read about ignition with ball powder, and used the WLR Mag primer from the get go with H414.With 44gr in my rifle it shot well in 90 degree to below freezing.I really cant prove anything except they did shoot well, with no apparent pressure signs.

I`d use the 210`s GC,primer prices are high now anyway.

Have used 210`s with above mentioned stick powders with no complaints.

Tried WLR Mag primers with 38gr Varget and did not like the looks of the primer after firing in my rifle.I like Varget real well but not with Mag primers.

In the old Data books H414 W760 and several other Ball powders where listed with magnum primers. With my cronograph testing, I find i get more consistant velocitys with magnum primers. I also reach higher velocity at a couple grains less in powder. For example with a max load of 44gr of H414 under a 85gr sierra HPBT using a CCI200 i get velocity swings of 150fps, with a CCI250 i get 30fps swings. Accuracy is greatly improved also.
