Does a lower need to be modified to use a .243 upper??

Does anybody know where I can get a .243 upper preferrably without the heavy barrel???

Thanks

.243 Win. is a .308 length cartridge (too long for an AR magazine). If you want .243/.308 you need to buy an AR-10 or Remington R-25 lower and match an upper to it.

Remington R-25

And no, those AR-10 and Remington R-25 uppers won't fit a standard AR-15 lower.

As above, 243 is chambered in the "AR15 on steroids". DPMS makes the R25 for Remington. Armalite makes their AR10. The 243 Win. will not mate up to a standard AR15 lower. I just bought a R25 but haven't had time to do much with it. Its beefy to say the least.

If you wanted to stay with a .243/6mm type of bullet and still use an AR15 you could go with a .243 WSSM. Would give you slightly better performance than a .243 Win and allow you to use the lighter AR15 package. Oly arms makes one as well as other custom manufacturers. Personnally I have one from Mike at D-Tech.

I will +100 on Mike at Dtech even though my .243WSSM upper came from Accuracy Systems. (nothing but good stuff to say about AS either though)
OlyArms can most likely get you an upper in the non-heavy version, but most likely NOT the pencil style. The wait at Oly will be less, than Mike or AS, but in any case...good luck finding them in stock somewhere.
I'd actually recommend considering the .25WSSM due to the larger deer bullets you'd be able to sling. getting much over the 100gr in the .243WSSM are tough to come by, and reloading them properly makes fitting them in the mag an issue.
I would suggest the WSSM AR15 version over the AR10 .243Winchester version, due to performance...but the AR10 version gets points on ammo availability and options.

Thank you Gents that answered everything and more. Looks like I will just get another AR-15 in .223 and use a bolt gun for deer.

Thanks again
