I got an 8 twist rock creek barrel put on my Rem 700 243Win,it is a sporter contour.

I am looking to work up a coyote load.

Anyone have any experience with bullets in the 70 to 85 grain weight range with an 8 twist 243?

Any suggestions on what has worked well for you.

So far I have tried some 87 grain v-maxes pushed by H 4350 tried 42 to 44.5 grains in 0.5 grain increments, all weighed on a RCBS 10-10. No pressure signs

But there was a lot of inconsistent behavior from the those loads.

The gun smith, who is a rifle shooter said, you need to try something else, that barrel does not appear to like that bullet, that barrel will shoot better than that or you will be getting a new one on there at no cost to you.

I'm all for the 105's but if a pure coyote load is what you're looking for I don't see why it wouldn't shoot an 80 grain nosler varmint bt. I have a 9 twist that will shoot anything from the 95 grain VLD's down to 55 grain nosler bt's. So I don't see why with an 8 twist you couldn't shoot 80 grain bt's.

Being a fast twist barrel, you will more than likely get better performance out of the heavier loads. I would look at the 95 gr Berger vld target bullets. The target bullets just have a little thinner jacket on them wich is better for coyotes in my opinion. I'm dying to get me a 1 in 8" twist. Good luck!

The hunting VLD's have the thinner jacket.
The 95's should make a pretty wicked coyote load.

Sierra 80 gr. Blitz shot great for me in a 9 1/4 twist. They should do fine in the 8 twist.

I would try 4064 with that v-max before you give up on it. I love the 87gr v-max, and for yote hunting nothing heavier is needed nor wanted........

that was my initial thought regarding a yote bullet.

in addition to that the barrel that was to go on the gun was going to be a 10 twist, however with as far behind as everything gun related is the gunsmith was able to get the 8 twist because it was available immediately as so that is what happened.

IMR 4064 and H 414 both shot well for me with the 80 grainers.

6mm V-maxes come in 58gr, 65gr, 75gr, and 87gr.

I would not consider the 87gr V-max to be a "lighter bullet". I know it is not a 105gr A-max, but it is more than enough bullet to take coyotes a long ways out......

I have shot lots of 87 vmax through my 243 but I just don't see the point. If I was to pay for a 1-8 twist I would be utilizing it. That's just how I do it, just sayin you know.

My 243 is 9 1/8 twist ot shoots all the vmaxes great the 58 has the best group. There also the cheapest and fastest. Every coyote has been a bang flop dead. With 243 hole in and no exit. They dont buck the wind real well but if you practice your wind reading and shooting in the wind its not difficult to hit'm hard. Ftr I have only killed dogs out to 170y with this bullet but sofar that's the farthest I've had to shoot at them. I regularly pound my 400 yard stell with this round in any wind. Steel is 10"x10".

I think I might have found the problem.

The barrel is in contact with the stock at one area along the channel.

I will take the sandpaper to it and see if that does not correct that problem...
