.243 Win ammo

Alright everyone, before you blast me for not checking the other threads for the best load/ammo: I have. That being said, I have looked at ballistics charts also, and reviewed several articles/charts/etc. on other websites and books (yes, I read) that deal with distance/penetration/expansion of bullets. What I want is real life experience input. My question is: From 50 to 150 yards, with a Remington 700 .243 Win, 24" factory contour barrel, what is the best bullet type and weight that you have found for coyotes for saving fur? Strictly .243 please, none of that "oh, well if you want to save fur you need a .204 or .17". Yeah. I don't have the cash for a new gun. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif Wish I did. What I do have in my gun cabinet suitable for coyote is a .243. Not being rude, these threads just seem to get way off base sometimes with comments about other calibers when it comes to saving fur, that's all. There. I apologize for the rant. Please help! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif

I'd stick with the heavy 100+ grain bullets meant for deer. They are a stronger bullet and will hold together giving you a small entrance and exit assuming you avoid the shoulder. If you try the lighter varmint bullets you have a big chance of having "splashes" and very big exits especially at close range.

I have found that the federal fusion ammo works well...the largest hole was a little larger then a quarter sized exit...I have not hit the shoulder with this round, but would imagin it being messy.

One fine new years morning I woke up at the crack of 10, and decided to go coyote hunting for a few hours.
Set everything aside prior to, and off I go.
Forgot my 55gr loads and decoys plus the calls at home.
Sitting in my ammo box was a back-up box of Fed. 100gr. gamekings, a mouse decoy and a squeaker.
If memory servs about 3:30 a pair cut the feild and I squeaked them to about 60 yards. Took out the maingy lookin one, and it was a quick bang flop. Smallish exit hole.

I have a whole box of Remington Accutip 95 gr my rifle loves... too much expansion, or OK with a coyote's body thickness vs. a deer's....thoughts? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif
PS Thanks for the tip Danurve, 100gr GameKings are the other box I just bought, my rifle seems to like them so far... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

If I gave a hoot about fur I'd be shooting 100 grain PSP's from my 243's. I normally shoot 85 grain Game King HP's for the bang flop factor they provide. Sometimes though they will cut a yote up pretty good.
I've shot several with the 100's from my Remmy 7400 that won't shoot the varmint weight bullets for nothin. I've not shot one yet with 100 grain PSP's that has resulted in damaged fur.

THANKS to everyone for all of their help and field wisdom!!! As usual, this forum is the best place for excellent experienced info. I appreciate it everyone!

The 100g Hornady SPBT loaded with 42.3g of IMR 4350 or H4350 with a Win Primer (bullet seated to touch lands) in a Rem Case may be very accurate in your rifle as it is in two of my 700-243's.

This load is excellent to use on deer or coyotes, it does not tear up coyotes and it does drop them in their tracks.

If you do not reload, this is the load that Hornday loads this bullet in their standard "Custom" ammo.

Good luck!

I have a Remington 700 ADL in .243 and all I shoot is Remington 80gr corelokts. I use this gun and bullet combo for everything. My gun really likes these bullets. It likes them so much that I have never tried anything else. I did buy a couple box of Hornady 55gr molys but I havnt got to shoot them yet. Just my .02 cents.
