.243 Win (CZ550) HATES 100 gr Remington Core-Lokts...

OK, I think I'm starting to learn my lesson about buying in bulk before testing. I purchased 500 bullets of 100 gr Remington Core-Lokts for my CZ550 and I CANNOT find a load for this gun. I'm actually beginning to think that it hates the weight and refuses to work with anything over 87 gr.

Anyway, who can offer a pet load in their .243 Win using 100 gr. bullets in either IMR4350 or Varget? I have loaded .020 off the lands and .010 off the lands and 7 different charges patterned like a shotgun. I'm using CCI BR2 primers and Winchester brass. Please tell me the following about your load:

- powder
- OAL
- primer
- bullet
- brass

My first question would be whats the twist of the barrel. You may be right about it not liking anything over 87grn bullets.

I also think the 100grn might be hard to stabalize.
I love 87grn Vmax out of my 6mm and my buddy shoots the same out of his 243.

What are you shooting with it? If you are deer hunting I can see the 100 or 87 grain bullets but if you are shooting coyotes, fox, squirrels, bobcat or prarie dogs why not use a 55 grain BallisticTip or a 70 to 80 grain bullet?

The 100 grainers will be for deer. I was trying to working up a load this spring for upcoming deer season. I reserve the lighter bullets for coyotes and bobcats.

just shoot the 85 gr sierra bthp gamekings and forget about the 100's. the 85 will get the job done.

My little Stevens 200 243 with 9.25" loves 105 gr Speers and all I use is IMR 4350........Maybe the bullet??? I have never had good luck with Remington or Winchester bullets. Try some Hornady Speer or Sierras

H4350 at 41 to 41.5 grains, WLR primer, Nosler 95gr. BT, Lapua brass. Try .030 off the lands. My rifle wont shoot up close either. This load gets 2900 fps and shoots under 1 inch every time. Usually much better but never worse. My rifle is an old M70 with 24" barrel.

How old is the gun and have you checked the brass build up in the barrel? Remington Core Lokt is one of my all time best bullets.

Don Jackson Remington Magnum/Ultramag

My CZ is two years old and has probably has about 200 rounds through it. It's cleaned after every shooting session with CLP Foaming Bore cleaner and Butches Bore Shine. The barrel does like to copper foul a lot.

I have the same gun and it won't shoot the 100gr SPBT. I am also thinking the 100s are out for me. It does pretty good with 85s and awesome with 55 and 60s.

I am trying to swap out 50 of the Sierra SPBT 100 grainers if anyone wants to try them in their .243. See the classified section.\

I agree with the copper build up. Try Wipe-Out and soak it overnight as /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gifdirections read. Definately read directions on this product. It works great for me.

Good luck.

Hawken,
Thank you for confirming in your CZ what I have been seeing. I have been pulling my hair out for two years with this gun thinking it was bad scope, bedding, etc. I'm a little put off in that it won't shoot 100 grainers and now I'm torn b/t getting rid of it or having it rebarreled with a 1/8 twist as I would like to shoot the heavier stuff. I emailed CZ's gunsmith yesterday and here is what he had to say about my CZ550 .243 and shooting 100 grainers:

"The truth is in the test fire. I beleive the 100 gr bullets are stablized or
they would be tumbling. Since 100 grainers
are the heaviest bullets made for the .243, you might just be pushing the
envelope for this caliber. The twist rate is
254mm or 9.9". You may have to step up to .308, to get better performance
with heavier bullets."

Try the 95 grain federal fusion bullets. Mine with a 1 in 10 twist loves them. Also if you are needing to shoot factory loads remington makes the same bullet in an 80 grain bullet as well.
