243 win vs 243 AI

At the risk of sounding stupid. What's main difference between the two. I don't reload so I guess I will never own a 243AI. Unless that ammo can be purchased through normal avenues.

The shoulders are blown out for more case cap. It allows more powder for more speed. Pretty much that simple.

You shoot standard loads through the rifle to Fireform the AI version.

Never having reloaded I don't understand the specifics of the .243AI. Can you shoot regular .243 in a rifle chambered for .243 AI?

Yes. You can shoot standard, of the shelf, ammo through the AI. It will blow the shoulders out to the dimensions pictured.

AI chambers also tend to minimize cas stretch, to al,ost mpnot existent. I am compete plating having my 243 reamed to AI for brass life and no more trimming!

I run the standard .243, my pal runs the .243AI. He does get about 150 fps over my 3780 fps with a 58g vmax.
I see no reason for the extra speed when it comes to varminting though. He likes speed I like moderate loads that are much more accurate.

Moderate speeds are not more accurate, wrong assumption...sorry about that! I have shot them over 4000 fps all bullets going into the same bullet hole with a group of less than .250!

My 6 BR shoots them at 3900 fps with AA2230, very tiny groups.

Ackley Improved, P.O. Ackley was a true American Gunsmith. He did not have the powders we have now. The 243win started life as a wildcat made from the 308win case. So let us bump it up to 243AI. Weatherby did the same thing, in the 240 Weatherby. I started hand loading in 1963 with my Dad, loading the 220 Swift and later the 270win. The 270win was a wildcat also starting life as a 30-06.
The question is would I buy and shoot a 243AI. The answer is no. I am very happy with my 243win rifles. I read here that people want to shoot 80gr bullets in 223rem. The biggest bullets I shoot are 45gr@3600fps. If I want to shoot 80gr bullets I take my 243win to the field. If I need to shoot 140gr I move to my 7mm Remington Magnums. Ackley knew there were limits to every wildcat he made and he pushed them. For that we can all thank him. If you like to tell everyone your rifle is an Ackley Improved round and it shoot well for you, have fun and shoot it. We all have “The need for speed”.

Not hardly....

The 243 Winchester was developed in 1955 for use in a specific rifle, the Winchester model 88... and took off.

It was designed by Winchester in 1923, and first released in 1925....

... which is why it is called the 270 Winchester, instead of the 270 Jones, or 270 Smith, or 270 McGillicutty.

Cat

I believe that both Huntington and Page had wildcat 6mm on the 308 case before the 243 was introduced. I'm going from memory here .

Your dead on with the 270 though, Win used the bastard .277 bullet size and before that there wern't any bullets to cat with.

Did a little searching and the Huntington 243 Rockchucker and the Page 240 Souper/Sooper Pooper were on the 7x57/257R case but the 240 Page was built on the Experimental 30 Cal Light Rifle case that went on to become the 308 Win refrenced from the "Speer #4 Loading for Wildcats" wish I had the book but I had to go on excerpts quoated by others.

When I bought my first 243 in the 1960's I did alot of reading on it and its developement.

Yup...

I know - but it was not really the same - not like the 22-250 and the Gebby Varminteer... or the .17 Mach IV and the 17 FireBall - all were interchangeable.

Most people give credit to Page for developing the 243.Winchester based the 243, from Page's 240 Page Pooper.I believe it came out in 1955 for the model 70 and the model 88,I dont think you can call it a rifle specific round.

ackley made his wildcats so if you ran out of ammo you could go to a store and buy off the shelf ammo and shoot in his gun, smart guy his shop was in salt lake city ut.and he killed a lot of big game with a 220 A.I.based on the 220.swift.

Shooting factory ammunition in an AI chamber will get lower velocity than if it were shot in a std. chamber. If you don't reload there's no point in having an AI cartridge.

Extra velocity doesn't mean less accuracy. And it's a fallacy that moderate loads are more accurate.

Look in a reloading manual and answer that one for yourself.
