25-06 bullet seating depth???

I know I might be looking for a reason to get a 22-250
or something, but I normally shoot 100g in my 25-06 and
seat the bullet .018 to .022 off the lands, I started
loading some serria 87g sp and the close as I could get my
land to bullet dim. (and feel confordable about getting the
bullet back in the case enough) was .050,
seems a bit too much, but I wanted some of you guys input,
I loaded up 6 and stoped. case length was .005 under max
I trimed them just to even them out....I don't think it
will be a bad problem if you guys think it will, i'll pull
'em and start over with a different bullet...
A friend of mine shoots the same gun and loads the 75g
V-max and says he uses .020 to the lands???? I need to look
at his bullets.....but forget those you cant get 'em, he's
been trying for over a year to get more, Hornady keeps
moving the avalable date back???????

I kinda wanted to shoot more ground hoggs this year and
was thinking about going lighter on bullets...maybe get
some 85g ct or varmint b-tips from nosler, heck if it's gonna
be any trouble I'll stick with the 100g b-tips or get a
22-250 / .204 or maybe a hmr.17 to ease the stress on my old
faithfull m77..

22-250 and 204 is all that is needed to relieve some stress on some prairie dogs or in your case, ground hogs...yep, going out tomorrow to relieve some stress!!

If you are open to it there are other bullets. I almost exclusively shoot Speer 87gr TNT's out of my heavy barrel 25-06. The Speer TNT bullets have been absolutely devastating in several of my 25-06's I have owned. Almost all of them liked 56gr or so of R19.

I'm shooting Berger VLD's out of my 6.5x55 with a .120 jump to the lands. .05" seems like a lot of jump but thats only because we've been trained to believe bullets will only shoot well .02" in the lands to .02" out. I'd shoot them and see how they do.

Can't fault anyone for wanting a 22-250! But in any event you might consider trying the 75 V-max (assuming you can find some) behind a stiff load of Varget. This target is at 100 yards with my A-bolt SS 25-06, recoil is very mild. I seat the bullet so that c.o.a.l. is 3.100" so the jump is a whole lot but doesn't much matter. As your friend can probably attest, this bullet has a ton of splat factor! Not for folks who save furs.

Yeah you guys are probably right, but old habits are
very hard to break, I worry about throat errosion I
guess it's been beat into my head. It's hard to ignor.
I'm at 3.150 with the 87g, I guess I'll shoot 'em and
see, then work up a load, I tried some explosive tip
bullets years ago 90g they did some damage, some did
some didn't. (so you guys are saying the .020 off the
lands is just a myth) ?????? even so, no mater how many
I shoot and bore scope it for a while at least I will
worry about it......Sick aint I ????? sorry....
What we need is a lighter bullet that's longer, as long
as a 90g that the tip will explode and leave the core
to continue on a tumbling journey.....well it makes sense
to me.....
BTW that 100g nolser B-tip flat does the job on ground
hoggs it makes 'em springy inside....gross.....I just
got a wild hair I reckon, and wanted to try some lighter
loads. It's all good.....Thanks again.....

Try the 85g NBT. You should be able to reach the lands in your rifle, or get real close. I shot the 75g vmax for a little bit as well, but the very low BC didn't help much past 500 yards or so, and the 85s would end up shooting flatter and drifting less while hitting harder and retaining more velocity anyways. The lowest weight I would shoot in a 25-06 now a days is the 85g NBT if it was a strict coyote rifle. If you use it as a dual purpose coyote/deer rifle, you'd be better suited to the 100g NBT or even better in my opinion the 115g NBT.

In a couple of my 25's, RL19 and 85g NBT's/CT NBT's were phenominal in both accuracy and speed, easy 1/2 MOA performers at 3600-3700fps. First and only powder I tried with the 85's, didn't need to look any further IMO. I shot quite a few coyotes with them out to 600 yards. Inside 300 yards or so it tore a pretty good hole in them, out past that they weren't as big, but it puts em down real quick like.
