25-06 Load?

Any of you have a favorite varmint load for a 25-06? If so, please sare your data. I have never played around with anything lighter than 90 grains, and not sure my rifle will stabalize it. Don't remember the twist off the top of my head, but I can easily check.

Having a tough time finding true varmint bullets local. I LOVE Hornady V-Max, but all they offer in .257 cal is a 75 gr. bullet and I can't imagine that thing shooting.

Help me. Throw me some data please. Thanks guys.

A good reason to shoot a 25/06 is to shoot long ways with authority...most bullets in this caliber do this.

I shoot two loads in Winchester brass only:
87g Speer Spt
56.0g of IMR 4350
3550 fps

100g Partition, Speer BT, Nosler Ballistic tip, Sierra Match
57.5-59.0g of R#19
Win Large rifle primer
3450 fps

Work up to these loads in your rifle because rifles vary and lot# of powder vary.

MY gun hates the 85g Nosler Ballistic tips...you never know

Just checked the twist on mine and it's 1:10" also. I guess that's standard.

And it just so happens that I have dang near a full pound of 4350. I played with it with my 120 gr bullets and my rifle didn't want to shoot groups. I'll see how it works with the 75 gr. V-Max.

Another question.....

What's the low end of the charge range with 4350 and 75 gr. V-Max? (Need somewhere to start and my Speer manual doesen't go lower than an 87 gr. bullet.)

Thanks again gentlemen.

This is out of the Hornady data book

.25-06 Remington (Hornady Handbook of Cartridge Reloading 6th Edition Vol 1)

75 Hornady V-Max IMR IMR-4350 50.2 3,200
75 Hornady V-Max IMR IMR-4350 51.9 3,300
75 Hornady V-Max IMR IMR-4350 53.5 3,400
75 Hornady V-Max IMR IMR-4350 55.1 3,500
75 Hornady V-Max IMR IMR-4350 56.7 3,600

Mine's a Ruger M77 MKII and I also use 75 gr V-max over Varget. At 50.4 grs, this is a fairly hot load - work up cautiously.

I have a Rem. 700 Adl with a Richard's microfit "wildcat thumbhole" stock that I bedded with "score high gunsmithing" micrometer pillars. Complemented with a Leupold VXIII 6.5-20. Fine duplex. This is one fine shooting rifle.

I'll pick up a 100 lot of 75gr. V-Max and a pound of Varget. Between that and the IMR 4350 I should be able to work up some acceptable loads.

Thankyou all for the input. I'm looking forward to some tight groups off the bench this weekend. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

My Ruger loves the 75Vmax also. Over H4350. I can't get anywhere near the lands with the stubby little bullet, it doesn't seem to matter though.

Play safe and have fun. Let us know how it goes?

Steve's Reloading pages lists a 25-06 75 gr bullet over IMR 4350 starting at 47.9 gr to 56.7 gr. Heres a link to Steves Pages. You have to do a little navigation to get to the data. Holler if you need any help getting there.

I've found his site to be very helpful. By the way Thanks a bunch Steve!

Well I'm about to hit the bench. I have a handfull of 75 gr V-Max loaded with 46gr. of Varget and a handfull loaded with 53.5gr. of IMR 4350. I'm right in the middle of the charts on both loads. Whichever powder groups better will obviously get the nod, then I'll try and fine tune.

I know what you mean about the stubby little bullets. With my die set for my 110 gr. Accubonds I didn't even touch the tip of the V-Max. Nowhwere close to the lands at all.

I get back with results.

I started using the 85 grain Nosler BT before the 75 grain VMax became available. It shot very well using SR4064 and a Fed 210 primer. I used SR4350 with the 100 grain Nosler BT.

I prefer using a faster burn rate powder with light bullets, particularly in cold weather, when the velocities drop and extreme spreads increase (more so with slow burn rate powders and light bullets).
