25-06 powder question

Hello,

Looking for a powder that may work well with 75 HP and 100 grain game king sierras. I have tried IMR 4064 in the 75s but haven't gotten the best results(around MOA). I am planning to reload some 100s soon and know cant really use 4064 for that.

Would IMR 4350 work well for my uses? Then step up to IMR 4831 for over 100 grain?

Thanks

I have used H-4831 for many years with 100 gr. Speer BTSP bullets. Wonderful accuracy. I haven't shot 75 gr. Bullets so can't respond to that one.

I read an article many years ago by the late Bob Milek who was shooting editor for Guns and Ammo magazine. He had quite a bit of practical knowledge with reloading and with in-field experience. He talked about H-4831 as being a prime powder for the 25-06. I tried it and haven't looked back. It has served me well for the last 22 years.

You won't know until you try.

Good luck, and keep us posted.

You picked 2 bullet weights that you're going to have a hard time finding a powder that performs well with both. When I shot the 75 gr bullet IMR4064 and Win760 were top performers. But for a 100 gr bullet IMR4350 was the top performer but it was to slow for the 75 gr bullets.

I never had good luck with the 75 gr. They were very accurate but the problem I had was they seemed to run out of steam around 300 yards.

From my use the 85 gr to 90 gr are good performing light weights. In fact you'd have an easy time picking a powder for the 85 gr and 100 gr.

I use IMR 4831 for every bullet weight from 87 to 120 grain. Primers I use are Remington 9 1/2's. I can get under 1" groups with all weight bullets and most around 1/2". Haven't tried lighter than 87 grains. Unless you already use both IMR powders you can do well with only one but I'd pick IMR 4831 if only stocking one 25-06 powder.

I don't shoot mine a lot, but when I do, it really likes a 100 Sierra gameking with H4831 SC. Considering it's a factory rifle (and a Ruger at that) I'm very happy with the performance of that combination.

Thanks for the info all. Ill try 4350 with the 75s see how it does. Ill probably get a can of IMR 4831 as well and seefor the higher weights. Ill post back with my results. Is their much difference between the H4831 and IMR 4831?

H4831 is one of the extreme powders, and it is probably less sensitive to environmental changes. As far as burn rate goes I couldn't tell you without a chart handy. Outside of 4064 and 4320, I don't believe I've ever bought any IMR.

I started out with the 25-06 using H4831, good results. Recently I started using IMR 4350, I can't see much difference, both work well. If you get the H4831 get the SC(short cut) version, it meters a whole let better.

The 75 gr V Max also shot very well with it just like the 85 gr NBT Better.

Do not mix up the charges between H4831 and IMR4831. Not the same. The IMR is hotter.

I've used H4831 and now H4831SC for almost 4 decades.

Hornady Handbook Edition (?) of the late '60's or early '70's listed
loads using IMR4895. There was a load for their 75gr HP which pushed
the bullet 3300fps. Another load for their 100gr SP pushed the
bullet 3100fps. Granted, neither load was a barn-burner (too much
IMR4895 could cause pressure problems), but both were dead accurate
in my Rem700, and POI was nearly identical out to 300yds. Recoil was
decent. I used the HP's for P-dogs and the SP's for mulies. There
was no need to sight-in for either bullet.

Anyone happen to have a Hornady Handbook of that era? I would be
interested to know how much powder was in the above loads. My
handbook disappeared over the years.

Danno - I went and found my first Hornady reloading manual that I bought in the early 70's. It was printed in 1973. Provided the data below to answer your question but data is not intended for reloading with H or IMR powder being produced now as the burn rates may have changed.

It has data for "4895" for the 75 gr HP and 100 gr Spire points.

****Caution*** There is no H or IMR designation for the powder, not sure which one (or both) was in production back then.

75gr - min 42.7 and 47.9 max 3400fps
100gr - min 39.8 and 42.9 max 3000fps

Do NOT use this data for powder recently purchased. Recommend using more up to date that would better match the powder being produced today.

I stumbled into 25-06 when I moved south and needed something to not destroy deer...like the 300 win mag I had. I've had great success with the 25-06 on whitetails with Berger 115gr over H4831...I do my part and they don't go more than 40 yards. Not setting speed records but got it to shoot 0.4 at 100 yards! The farmer I hunt with started having coyote issues a couple years ago so I wanted something a bit lighter. I tried Sierra 90gr over H4831 but didn't like the accuracy. I stumbled on Speer 100 gr HP and being out of H4831 found I could use varget, which I had on hand. Worked like a charm! Wouldn't be my first choice, but running about 0.75 at 100 yards makes me smile. My wife has a 270 win so I tried the same bullet and powder combo in 270 and it was just as good! Definitely not a fur saver though.

I don't think that you should use the same powder for both bullet weights. I hope you try R#19, win cases, win primers with the 100g speer bTSP at 3400 fps.
