.257 Roberts AI question

I have a barrel ordered and was wondering if anyone has one of these and would care to comment on what it's like to load for and shoot. I have some 75gr V-Max bullets waiting to be tried out on those long range Coyotes.

Thanks in advance.

I shoot a 257ai built on a model 721 remington. Not shooting anything as light as a 75, but between 87 hornady, 100 nosler bt and a few others in that range. use imr 4350, rl 19 and tried h380. the 87 hornady shot best with the rl 19, the 100 bt was best with the imr 4350. my barrel does not do well with anything heavier than the 100g. As far as loading for it, my fire form loads do pretty well, and are not wasted. Everything else is the same as loading anything else. Good luck with it, this is my second one, and a keeper.

I have a Mexican Mauser in .257 Roberts Improved. Barrel is 26" Douglas with #3 countour and a 1/12 twist. It is my favorite coyote rifle. I have shot a lot of coyotes with 100 grain Sierra 100 grain Pro Hunters at 3250 fps. I am posting a photo of a load I worked up with 85 grain Nosler Ballistic silver tips.

Thanks for the replys. Is it better to use the slower powders with this caliber? Would H335 be too fast? I have a bunch of it and finding different powders around here can be hit and miss.

I have and use the 257 AI solely for coyotes. It’s a custom 24” SSK barrel with brake (1-10” twist) for the TC-Encore frame. A Burris FF-II 3.5 x 14 Ballistic Plex sets on top.
I make the brass out of the parent 7x57 Mauser. My pet load is 48.5 grains of Vhit N-150, CCI-200, 75 grain Vmax. These run 3636 fps and print .990” @ 200 yards from the bench.
I have taken coyotes from 38 to 168 yards with this load. All bang flop. None of the bullets have exited, the one taken broadside at 38 yards, did produce a 5” blow back entry hole.

Good luck with your project.

H335 will be to fast of powder for the 257 ai, your better of with tryed and true IMR 4350, A min load would be used for fire forming and it can be used with 75 gr right up to 120's . You may use varget for fire forming aswell, but hunting rounds I'd see how 4350 shot, then go from there. Where are you in saskabush that powder is hard to get way North?

If it's not available in Prince Albert (1 place) I have to head down to WSS in Saskatoon and it can be hit and miss getting it there. Cabellas is opening up a new store there in 2012 so I hope things become easier to find after that. I assume there is little difference between the IMR 4350 and the Hodgdon 4350 as they are 112 and 113 on the burn rate chart.

I figured you had to be North, I have a few buddys around speedy creek and moose jaw and they never really have problems getting powder. I stock up when ever I can, in fact I bought 3 lbs of vaarget the other day , I walked into a local gun shop and they just had restocked, grabbed all they had on the shelf at the time and bought it up. Imr and h 4350 will be close but not exactly the same, if you work up a load you'll be fine with H4350.

I've only been loading for the 17FB and .223 so I have a lot of Benchmark and H335 sitting here. I'll probably buy the H4350 as it's one of the 'Extreme' powders and should work well summer or winter. I want to drill a few Coyotes with some 75gr V-Max and see how that works.
