.257 Roberts for Coyotes 75gr VMax or 75gr Sierra HP

I'm going to be loading a .257 Roberts for coyotes, and would appreciate some feedback about the above choice.

I like the 75gr VMax in my .243 and 60gr VMax in .223....so would be inclined to go with the Hornady, but welcome your input.

Thanks

I load the 75gr Sierra HPs in my 25-204 at about 3150fps and they flat hammer coyotes. Needless to say there is nothing fur friendly about them.

I would think the Vmax would make a pretty big hole in a yote. Have you looked into Berger bullets or Sierra MatchKings rp

Thanks for the responses......the BC of the VMax is substantially better than the Sierra, and digging around in my "stash" of components I found a partial box of the VMax's from the days when I owned a .257 Weatherby Magnum....so I'll load some of these.

I'm not very interested in the fur, so a big hole isn't necessarily a problem......

I might have to try some lighter weights in mine. I have been having good luck with 100 sierra's though. No dramatic varmint bullet type kills, but small entrance and exits.

I'm using the Sierra 75 HP in my .250 Savage. This round is pretty close to your Bob, in velocity. I'm getting a chrono'ed 3320 fps with this bullet and 44.0 grains of H414, from a 22 inch barrel.

I've killed about 25 or 30 coyotes with this load, and as long as you keep the bullet out of the "ball-joints" it does a good job. Hit the joints, and you will have a massive exit hole.

I've never used the BT types, so no info on it.

Of the 2 bullets you mentioned I would probably choose the Vmax. I tried the 75 gr Sierra in my .25-06 for 2 seasons of groundhog hunting. I found the Sierra to be an accurate bullet but lacking in range. Beyond 300 yards I had hits where they didn't open and went clear through the animal. There were many times where the animal just crawled off to die. What I learned in those 2 seasons is nothing kills like a Spitzer for hunting purposes, at least for ground hogs.

My first choice for what you want would be the 87 gr Sierra or the new 90 gr Sierra or even the 85 gr Nosler. In 20 years of groundhog hunting with the 87 gr bullet I experienced nothing but 1 shot kills and 1 hole.

I shot the V max's in my 250 savage and it's not very fur friendly but the dogs don't walk away. I killed one yesterday with that rifle using a 100gr Nos BT, Not the best shot placement but it sure did the job. Little hole in and out.I've also had great luck with sierra 90gr HPBT gameking. they are really acurate in my rifle.
