.257 Weatherby Magnum

Educate me on the 257 Wby Mag. I purchased one from a guy, and it’s headed this way. It’s a Remington 700 CDL, blued, with fluted 26” barrel. I hadn’t ever saw this version before, only the stainless fluted one. I have a VX-2 4-12x40 AO CDS I plan to put on it with either Talley lightweights or might try the Leupold backcountry mounts. Plan to use it for whitetail deer. Any experiences on bullet weights or performance greatly appreciated. We have a lot of open pasture land and fields so k wanted something I could stretch out a little bit but not have to go crazy dialing knobs or calculating hold overs.

I have used the Barnes 100 grain TTSX, and Nosler Accubond load in my Ultralight. The TTSX is extremely accurate in my gun. The TTSX has worked great on a few Mule Deer. This is the only rifle I do not hand load for, I only use the Weatherby factory ammo.

Thanks

The Accubond load was on the top of my list to try. I’ve never shot anything with Barnes bullets, but may try them also. This is of course if I can find them. I’ve got almost a whole year until next deer season to be ready though so that’s a plus.

I use Barnes 100 gr TSX in my 25-06 on antelope. Try to place shot a little high just behind the shoulder. Most just drop straight down. Never had 1 take more than a couple of steps. Tired to keep shots broadside. Exit hole wasn't much bigger than my thumb. I load my own using IMR4350. Very accurate.

While I have never owned one, or any Weatherby for that matter, the .257 has always been my favorite. A co-worker of mine used his for all North American big game except big Alaskan bears where he used his .300 Mag. He never needed but one shot for all animals including the biggest moose. I think they are a great cartridge.

I have the exact gun except in stainless like you mentioned. Got a 4-14x 40 Leup VX3 on it and love the weight and the way it handles. I shoot the factory 115 BTs and do not like them. I have shot multiple whitetails that needed a second shot. It is crazy because I have killed truckloads of deer over the years with a 22-250 55gr PSP and dropped them in their tracks. I personally think it is the bullet. Too many like the cartridge and have good things to say about it. Never tried another bullet because I just switched over to a different gun.

25’s are hands down my favorite. Have owned and loaded for almost all the factory chambers except 250 Savage. I’m on my second Weatherby, the first a Vangard now have a Mark V, At 81 and still working my hunting days are about over, so it’s down at the shop on the consignment shelf. I have used just about every bullet out there except some of the newer specialty ones. My all time favorite for coyotes is the 85 gr Ballistic tips and my favorite big game bullet is the 120 gr Partition. Good luck and good shooting, in my opinion you can’t go wrong with a 25

Received the rifle and I’m pretty pleased with it. Factory trigger needs some love or replacing. Expected that and have my eyes out for either a Timney or TriggerTech replacement. I purchased a tuned walker style from a guy before that’s pretty sweet, so I may see if he has anything or can just work the one in it now.

you might want to try the 92 gr Hammer Hunter bullet they work great and very easy to get a load set up. call Steve (the owner) at Hammer Bullets and he will help, I used their bullets in Africa this past April and will be using them next April in Africa including a cape buff with their bullets

The 257 Wby is awesome. It’s ballistically “identical” to my 25-06 AI.

100gr Nosler BT or 110 NAB seem to do the trick for me. I had awesome luck with 90gr GMX to I believe it was, but I’d have to check. Killed deer, hogs, coyotes, even some elk with those loads and some of them wayyyyyy the heck out there.

The only reason I own a 25-06AI over the Weatherby is Brass price and case life. Otherwise it’d be the other way around.

Good luck!
