260 or 7mm-08

Which round would be best for my wife?
With her Arthritis and Fybromyalgia she is VERY recoil sensative. That is the major concern. The next would be weight of the rifle. It would have to be available in a very light rifle.
Right now she has a Browning A Bolt in 25WSSM which is a dream to handle and shoot.
She absolutely loves the rifle, with the light weight, and very reasonable recoil. Add those to the fact that deer rarely move out of their tracks after the shot.

But, with ammo gettng harder to find, I may have to get her another rifle one of these days.

If your shooting factory ammo, the 7-08 is an obvious choice. I have really tried to find enough advantage with a 7-08 vs 260. I cant...for my uses anyways.
I simply prefer the 7-08.

I shoot the 260, and love it. It is definately a reloaders caliber, because there are really not many factory offerings. In addition, you'll probably not find it on your average sporting goods store shelves.

In all honesty, there really is not a whole lot of difference between the two, and both would fill your needs well.

Easiest route right now would be to stock pile more ammo, rather than buy another gun. Not that I would dissuade anyone from doing that, but I can't see her burning through bunches of ammo, unless she's shooting prairie dogs.

Sounds like you don't reload. I'd look into going that route as well.

I've got both, but they're set up differently. The 7-08's for "normal" hunting, the 260 set up more for long range. If you "have" to buy a new gun, I'd go 7-08 if you don't reload, toss up if you do.

The way she likes the 25wssm, Id look hard at the .243 instead of the other 2. But if not then the 7-08 due to the ammo being available everywhere. I have a 7mm-08 Savage and like it very much.

7mm-08 is one of my favorite cartridges and when it came time for a buddy to buy a deer rifle that was my recommendation. He bought one and loves it. But going back a couple years I was building a combo deer/predator rig and was really wanting to go with something different. Looked at .260, .25-06, .250 Savage, .257 Bob, etc etc and when all the dust settled I didn't see enough advantages to all those other cartridges to over take the .243. Went with a .243.

Like stated, stocking ammo now while it's available may be a better choice, reloading is another option yet there are many days when I wished I had never started and just shot factory fodder.

I've purchased 7mm-08's for both of my son's and they love them. Great round with lot's of off the shelf ammo and recipes for reloading. Very accurate round and can also load reduced recoil loads.

17hmr. Little recoil and good, make that great, for everything under the sun(or moon). I read that at several places.

Or how about a .243 or 6mm? Mostly deer, right?

260 Remington. Less recoil with lighter bullets. When "very sensitive to recoil" comes into play. But I quit using off the shelf ammo back in the 70s.

I would just load up a bunch of .25 WSSM...
If factory loads are all that you want, then a 7mm-08 or even a .243 would be my next choice. Probably a .243 if recoil is as big an issue as you say.

I thought you'd already settled on a .260? Quite frankly the .243 doesn't have the loyal following it does because there's anything deficient there. Some call it a lady's rifle for the lack of recoil thing. I've been using one for over 30 years for deer, coyotes, and ground squirrels, tried other rounds and keep going back. I'm shooting a 243 WSSM now, but I'm thinking it's a bit sharper on the recoil.

You and your wife would be happy campers with a .243.

Keep an eye on 25WSSM ammo on GB, bid on lots of multiple boxes and save a bundle. I've been stocking 243 WSSM like that. If she's happy with that why mess with happy?

I think the 17HMR is a bit much for deer. I do however pull the bullets on 17HMR ammo and replace it with home made Silver bullets for Werewolves. And it will cut down a werewolf.
It's a personal thing, but I not care for a 243 as a deer round, even though I know many peeple who use them with great success.
Yeah, ya'll are right about stockpilling ammo. My wife shoots, at max, 2 rounds a year, so the 3 boxes I've got ordered will last a while. That is unless I carry it very much.lol

I would say either would be fine.
Have her wear hearing protection and get a good solid-bottomed muzzle brake. This will take the recoil down to very pleasant levels.

I had her stock cut down by a fellow who cuts them different for women. She also puts a piece of egg crate foam under her jacket and has no problem with recoil from the 25WSSM.
I guess I bought the hype on the 25WSSM, but she absolutely loves the rifle. I like carrying the light weight rascal for deer too.

Go with the 7mm-08, whether reloading or buying factory ammo. The 08 ammo is much more readily available in the stores and if you reload there is a much larger selection of bullets and weights to choose from. Just my .02 worth.
