Was looking hard at 6.5 Grendel uppers then finally made a decision. I wanted an AR 10 in either 243 or 260. A couple days later some crazy #€£k kills a bunch of kids and now my AR 10 seems out of reach. Was able to scratch up $1500, but not double that. So assuming this gun craze dissolves, I'm wondering which way to go. 243 or 260 and does anyone have one they'd like to sell? It will be used mostly for coyotes with a few deer too. I currently shoot a AR 15 in 223 and feel underpowered at times. I want to knock the sh#t out of them dogs, you know, just see paws in the air. I don't currently reload although I want to, just don't have time for a 26th hobby. Also, I'll be screwing a suppressor on the end so a 20" barrel is the max. Too awkward with anything longer. So just looking for some good advice or bad. By the way I'm firm on the 243 or 260. 308 ain't my thing.
 
Rock River Arms makes a .243 upper. You could just buy their LAR-8 lower and the .243 upper and you would have it. I'm planning on getting a .260 too, but the wait to have one built is so long I'll get a bolt gun in the near future.
 
Use that 1500 as a deposit and order a gap-10 get in 6mm creedmoor or 6.5 creedmoor they will both work better with the mag length restrictions.
 
The problem with the 260 in the AR10 is mag length. The mags are too short for the good BC bullets. Why not get an upper in 243 WSSM for your AR15?

I have a AR10 in 243 He built for me and I also have a 260 on order.
I do reload and I'm going to try and work up a load with the Berger 140gr Hybird for the 260
Out of the 243 I'm using 95 and 105 gr Bergers. The 75-80gr also worked well. Go to his face book page Specialized Dynamics and he has a pic of my rifle on the main page Its hanging on a elk rack.

Ok, ok. I said AR 10 and 243/260 and I do not reload. I know the other suggestions are designed to help with things I may not have thought about, but they aren't practical. Mostly because I don't reload. I've been saving brass for years but I got no time and no one to teach me. I will eventually teach myself, just ain't in the cards right now.
So. I don't know what a gap-10 is. Anything wssm is impractical and in many people's opinion not useful. And finally, is mag length really a problem for the 260 Rem? I don't want to shoot 1000 yards, I'm more interested in faster bullets that hit them a ton out to practical coyote range. Which for me is less than 400 yards.
 
Why is a AR15 in 243 wssm impractical? They sell ammo, you dont have to reload.

A 223 will take coyotes out at 400yds. There are many calibers in the AR15 platform that factory loads are made for that will easily take a coyote at 400yds.
 
It is only a problem if you reload and want to use the longer Bergers and SMKs so you should be fine with the AR10 in 260Originally Posted By: Suppressed in SDOk, ok. I love my .260 Rem...Ruger 77 ss.
I have shot 16 Arctic Wolves , 12 caribous, wolverine and a few moose with it!!!

Although a very mild round it takes down moose with ease.....

My furthest wolf kill was 1/3 of a mile away!!

I've killed a pile of yotes with a 223. In fact, I nailed one sitting on a hill warning howling at me at 528 yards. But I've also had too many yotes run off with a bullet in them. I know, bullet placement. But I want to put a big hole in them. I decided against a different upper for my AR 15 cause for the cost you can darn near get an AR 10. Just more useful in my opinion.
 
I like the 260. It will do so much more with a much better penetrating bullet. That said, and as already mentioned, the mag of the AR-10 does limit bullet seating to less than ideal. That is why I rebarreled a Pennsylvania machine gun {760} to 260. It aint no auto, but it's almost as fast and I can seat 'em where I need 'em. It's also alot lighter than an AR-10. If you haven't handled an AR-10 I suggest you do not just order one. First one I had the oppurtunity to shoot killed my thoughts of ever buying one. Just flat slap too big and bulky for me. I definately suggest you handle one before running mad after it. The wispy light handling characteristics of an AR-15 is long gone from the big 10. Other than looks from a distance they dont compare.
 
Great advice regarding the ar 10 and less than desired handling capability.. I was in the same boat as the poster and was extremely lucky to have a friend of mine give me the exact advise.. I wouldn't want to have to lug that platform or shoot of hand on a regular basis.. But that's just me... I can see it being superb for BR applications but for going from stand to stand and quick target acquisition.. I'm keeping with the ar 15 platform.. I'm in the process of researching a round like you posted.. It's going to have to be in the ar 15 platform for me.. Best of luck and please keep us posted with your development...

I don't know what you are comparing, but unless it is a basic DPMS 308 to a very high end upper there is a big price gap from AR10 to AR15. I got a good deal on my Maten receiver set and it was still 2.5 times the cost of any of my AR15 receivers, and that was before the madness.

Right now isn't the best time to be getting into a new AR platform. Think mags are hard to come by, try finding AR10 mags. Trying to build anything right now is a practice in futility.

You can keep a look out and pay a premium for a complete rifle, or wait and hope it gets better. Overall I think you would have better luck finding an upper.
 
I was comparing a dpms AR 10 for around $1400 and precision firearms 6.5 Grendel upper. Similar price. Maybe not comparable quality, but that's what I was looking at.
 
Found my rifle anyway. Bought it on gunbroker. Price was a little inflated, but not anywhere near as bad as other ARs on gunbroker. Consider the extras/upgrades on it, was a ok deal. DPMS lower, JP upper, trigger job, bipod, etc, etc. all in 260 Rem. will post some pics when I get it.
 
Saw your .260 on GB. That's a sweet looking machine. I'm willing to bet that you're going to love it! I love my SD LR .260. I just got a can on it and can't wait to shoot it. Let us know what you think after a trip to the range!
