.264 win mag

Picking up a .264 win mag this weekend and just wanted some opinions on this caliber. The gun is a m700 bdl from the 60's and that is the main reason I like the rifle, but my curiosity is getting the best of me. I have heard one or two good reviews over the years but never saw myself getting one until now. I hunt whitetails and pigs from the western nc mountains to the south carolina low country, and now im thinkin of takin the .264 this season. Any opinions?

Why not? I had a 264 years ago, built it up on a Mark-X action.. Sold it after a few years after taking a few Deer and Elk with it.. Back then components and bullets were scarce.. I then bought a 270..

With the great selection of high BC 6.5 MM bullets that are available, the 264 Win Mag is a great open country flat shooting rifle suitable for about anything in NA, with the exception of the large bears, if good bullets are used.

Some people complain about the recoil of the 264 Win Mag, but with a well built rifle stock it is sharp but not bad. Also, some complaints about barrel life have always floated around because the cartridge is over bore, but for the average meat hunter you'll probably get a life time of shooting and hunting from a 264 Win Mag rifle. Get it hot with some rapid large volume shooting as a steady diet and it probably won't last a life time.

zilla, how did your 264 perform on the deer and elk, what bullets did you use?

winny fan, what type bullets would you recommend? this will be the smallest bore rifle that I have ever hunted "big game" with. up till now never used anything smaller than a 270.

For big game, I am a Sierra bullet fan and I like the 140 grain boat tailed spitzer bullet. It will work for any game from antelope up through elk and moose. (Game King)

Had a M70 Westerner shortly after they came out in the early 60's.

Put down a couple of speed goats with it and a ton of jacks.

Never should have sold it!

realtree hunter,

I am on my third .264 Win Mag. A Win. M70, a Browning Safari rifle and now a Ruger Hawkeye. All have been at least acceptable shooters and the Hawkeye will shoot sub-MOA when I am having a good day. Bullets used have ranged from 160grn Sierra semi-spitzers to 125grn Nosler Partitions. My favorites are 140grn Sierra GameKings over a load of H4831 or Rl-22. Performance on large to really large deer has been excellent. No deer has taken more than one bullet, ranges have been from 60 to 425 yards. No bullet has yet been recovered.

I am a big fan of all of the .264 cartridges. At the moment, I am working with a 6.5x284 that will give near 264WM velocities with 140grn Bergers. No game shot with that bullet yet but, I have heard very good reports and it has a very high BC.

140 Berger VLD (hunting bullet) is a very good hunting bullet.I have taken whitetails from 50 yards to 575 with that bullet. Hornady SST is a good bullet also just not quite as sleek.

My 300 Win. Mag is now a safe queen and has been for a few years ever since I got a hold of a pre 64 Mod. 70 Winchester in .264 Win. Mag.

Killed some mule deer with it so far. Would take it elk hunting if I was to draw the tag I want.

I have been using the plain old Hornady 140 Gr. soft point bullets. I don't load for it like I would my 22-250, just size, prime, charge with powder and seat the bullet still get right at 1 MOA @ 100 yds. I love the cal. and the rifle.

I have one of these in a new REM Sendro II. Ive been a fan now for 3 years. I first saw this round perform at the gun range and the rest is history. All Ive used mine for is shooting coyotes. I dont keep hides. Ive been loading 100gr NBT. Look around for good loads, they are out there it just takes time to find them. Good luck with your new killer!

Thats a consideration, I have to be reall nice to family to get ammo reloaded but Ive considered it. I have actually been finding several manufacturers that load with some quality bullets, ie.. nosler loaded accubonds and such.

Killed em as dead as anything. I used a 140 Nosler Partition. H4831 I believe..

Ive loaded H4831 and 7828ssc when loading 130 gr Swift Scriocco II and the 7828 was slower in velocity but the accuracy was much better than the H4831.
