Hey guys,
I'm trying to get set up to reload for the new rifle. Got 110 gr. V-Max and Varget powder. Can't find much in the way of 'recipes' to work from. Any ideas?

If Varget is what you have, experiment between 50.5 and 52.5 grs. Work your way up. You'll get between 3200-3300fps+----2MG

"Can't find much in the way of 'recipes' to work from. Any ideas?"

You have got to be kidding??
There are at least 50 years of recipies out there.

Ditto what Jack said. The latest Hornady manual will be what you need.

Varget is a mite fast for optimum velocity, but you might find a very accurate load with it.

Usually for the .270 the 4831 powders are best with the 130 grain, the RL22/H1000 powders (slower than 4831) best with the 150.

For the light bullets try H4350 or IMR 4350. The latter worked well for me with the old Hornady 110 hollow point before my barrel went south. Use what your manual says and find what works best. CCI magnum rifle primers often give better accuracy in the .270 than standard primers (does for me anyway - and drop your charge slightly if you use them).

If you don't have a manual, get one, you shouldn't be reloading without one.

I will be getting a manual, was hoping to wait until I buy the equipment though. I've searched several times on the Net and have found 3 possibles, but they are pretty different so I thought I'd ask here. I checked both Varget and Hornady sites for info and couldn't find it.

Get the manuals. I would not trust loads that you get off the 'net. You never know if there's a misprint or if the poster may be running hot loads. Hornady book show a huge spread for the 110 Vmax. 41.4 min to 52.3 max. With a spread like that, you could go through a lot of powder and expensive bullets before you find the optimum load. I would knock 10% off the max (52.3 - 5.23) and start at around 47 and work up slowly looking for pressure signs.

I have used 4831SC with some 90gr Sierras in my .270. Scary fast, accurate, flat-shooting and bang-flopped a bunch of 'yotes with it before I switched to .243 and .223.

A reloading manual should be your first purchase when you start getting reloading equipment. Someone on this site said before to make sure you read all the boring stuff in the front, well put! that's where they tell you how not to blow yourself up!

First of all, repeat after me. "R-22 is the King in the 270"---2MG

I gotta echo that. When reading some of the old articles concerning accurate and reliable loads you will just have to try RL (Reloder22). I push them to the max listed loads for some of the most dazzling accuracy you will find with the .270win.

However, I cant add any info on loads using a lighter bullet than the 130gr Noslers.

Don't go cheap on the handloading manuals. Get more than one and as said above get them now.

I used to reference 'pet loads' such as posted on various sites. Then I found a load posted there that seemed extreme. Sure enough I mentioned it and the person who posted the load came on the forum to say that he did not use that load anymore as it was too hot! He never removed it from that site however!

As to powders work up a load using the Varget that you have. I found an accurate load for the 270 Win using RL15 so Varget may work well also.

As to RL 22 being the best powder I go by what the late, great Bob Hagel wrote that "Each rifle is an individual"

The classic powder for the 270 Win has been 4831 by the way not that RL 22 is not very good.

I used IMR4350 with a Sierra 130gr. SPBT with my 270.

A friend has been loading his daughter's 270 Win with the same bullet but using H4831 and reaching 3175fps, nearly 200 fps faster than I was achieving with IMR4350.

My loads shot so well in my rifle that I did not worry about increased velocity. I went with the best accuracy load for my rifle and I recommend that you do the same for your rifle.

H4831 and RL-22 will work best with near max powder charges.

Thanks to all for the inputs... I'm probably not going to be loading now until the 1st of the year. This gives me time to gather up the books. I respect the importance of the proper information and the possibility of "mishaps" if not followed.

Yes, it's been a common report that RL22 seems to work better the nearer you are to max loads.

Other than R-22, H4831SC is the only other I'd buy. If it won't shoot with one of these two, don't bother trying a different powder, get rid of it.......2MG

What about H4350? The wife's .270 loves this powder from 150gr partitions to 140gr BT. First powder I tried in the gun and ended up being the last. 3/4" groups are plenty respectable for me.

ruger300.

I have probably loaded more IMR4350 in more cartridges than anything else. It works well in a lot of them. I still find R-22 and 4831sc better in the 270. As some have mentioned, they seem to do best when pushed to max or near max and that's why I handload. I want the fastest, most accurate load possible. If you are happy with your current load, stick with it. If it ain't broke don't fix it. But sometimes tinkerin' is fun too.......2MG

I have two .270s and the H4350 only excells with the 150s in both rifles. About even accuracy with the 140s using 4831SC but a few fps slower. Use what works in your rifle. No tow are the same.

Repete after me NEVER USE DATE FROM THE INTERNET without confirming it with a reliable manual. You said that you have not bought equipt yet? go with RCBS get one of the "kits" it will include a good Speer manual but get a Hornady Manual also as well as any others you can afford. Personally I like the Hogden manuals since I use a lot of H powders. If you look around at Midway USA you will see the Loadbooks they are good but ONLY have load data reprinted from the other manuals no loading tips or instructions.
Plese note I have not mentioned Lee loading equipt. Not to diss them but I wore out three lee progressives when I was doing a lot of match shooting. My single stage RCBS is going on thirty years old now and still loads as well as when it was new. I also have a RCBS turret that is going on ten years now and is as fast as any of the Lee progressives i ever used. Get good Quality equipt and you will never have to replace it.
