Has anybody ever used the speer grand slams in their 270's?? I plan on developing a deer/elk load for next year and am looking at the speer grand slams really hard...was thinking about the noslers but nahhhh.....they too much and have heard about 40% horror stories so i am steering clear of noslers, i also plan on using the sierra gamekings as they are cheap and seem to have a great reputation as well.

I have used the Speer Grand Slams in 30-06......one season.

Went back to the Sierra's. No real horro story, just have much more confidence in the Sierra's

You last comments say it all to me, and I agree 100%:

Three years ago Rick Jamison did a exhaustive comparison of bullets in Shooting Times. The Speer Grand Slam rated with the ordinary cup jacketed lead core bullets in penetration.
The ballistic coeficient of this design is lower than ordinary and so will shed velocity more quickly than other choices thus limiting your range.
There are better choices for bullets in your 270.

i think you were right on the money when yu said gamekings are cheap and have a great reputation. used gamekings for the last couple of years in 300 mag and have had no failures. moose and caribou both dropped with these bullets. complete penetration every time. seem to be very accurate in my gun. and the best part, they cost less then half of some of the premium bubllets.

Which Nosler bullets are you hearing the bad reports about? I would take what you read on these boards with a grain of salt.

The Nosler Partition has been a work horse game bullet for many years all over the world. I have killed and seen many bull elk die from a .277 150 grain Nosler Partition bullet. I would tend to believe that a Nosler Partiton is designed to hold together and penetrate better than both the GameKing and the Grand Slam's.

You might look into two different bullets one for deer and the other for elk. A good deer bullet isn't necessarily the best elk bullet.

270yotekiller:

I have three .270's and for my big game bullet I use the Speer Hot-Cor in 130 and 150gr. weights.. All my .270's shoot great with them and I have never lost any animal I shot with them.. All but one large Colorado Mule Deer was killed with one shot and were DRT. The large mule deer didn't realize he was dead and ran about 30 yards.
My personal opinion is that you don't need the premium bullets, unless you are going to take "Texas Heart Shots"..

I have never loaded any Speer bullets but the Sierra Gamekings and Pro Hunters have always worked well for me. I have tried some of the Nosler's but for twice the price I don't believe they are twice as good as the Sierra's. Just my opinion.

Sierra 130gr SBT have always served me well on anything from buffalo, deer, elk, coyotes, crows, groundhogs, prairie dogs etc. get the picture?? I like them!!

If I were looking for a deer\elk load for the 270 I'd use 140 gr. scirrocos. Or, 130 gr. scirrocos for deer and 150 gr A-frames for elk, which is what I use now. Of the 2 A-frames I've recovered from elk, one weighed 148 grains and the other 145. Each mushroomed perfectly. Maybe I can post a pic sometime.

I have been using the 140gr Hornady interlock bullets for elk, hogs, antelope, and deer the last several years. They shoot well and have done the job on every animal. My wife took a huge 6x6 with the 140 grain bullet at 230 yard. Dropped the elk in its track. I have taken 4 or 5 elk with this bullet none required a follow up shot. I have also taken 6 mule deer and one antelope. The bullet did everthing it was supposed too. I love this load for every big game animal i have taken with it. If its not broke do not fix it.

I have taken 2 big game animals with the Speer Grand Slams...both performed well, and retained 90% + of their origional weight...So I would never worry about using them...but I too have moved to the Sierra GameKing...I like the higher BC for the .270, and in my gun they are a little more accurate.... Price is so small a difference that unless you shooting BR with them...I don't worry about it...I just want a good flat shooting accurate bullet for my gun.

The buck I shot this weekend with one sure did not like it. Shreaded lungs and an exit what's not to like. That said I was using factory this year because of time constraints. Next year it will probably be 130 triple shock's, I want my 270 to be a back-up elk gun, but if I was just going to hunt deer with it i'd be hard pressed to justify anything much more than bulk cor-locks, deer just are not that hard to kill, with the right shot.

For the elk side of that deer/elk load, you can't beat the 150 Nosler Partition. The horror stories you heard were more likely the Balistic Tips. The TSX from Barnes is getting a good reputation too. For deer, I think most any of the cup and core bullets work well enough in the 270.

Well im going to pick up the sierra 140 gamekings today and start stuffing some cases! Thanks for the input from all you seasoned reloaders (i am new to reloading) but i dont really want to discredit the noslers just yet as i havent tested them for myself so i will refrain from mentioning where i heard these "horror stories".

Thanks guys!
