I currently am tinkering with my 270 load to get an accurate one. I am using H1000 powder and 130gr Silvertips and 135gr Matchkings.

Anybody use this powder or these bullets in there 270?

I tested out using varget in the round and it turned out to be fairly accurate and lighter kicking than my lowest H1000 load.

What are your guys's 270 loads?

I load the 110g Tipped tripple shock with two loads seated .050 off the lands:

58g of Win 760 at 3350= 1/2" groups at 100; 1" at 200

and a magnum load of 57g of R#17 with a 215 at 3550 fps with 2" groups at 300 yards, which shoots as flat as my varmint rifles.

The Predator Masters Google Search feature is very helpful here. An appropriate load of H4831 under a quality 130 gr. bullet has worked wonders since Cactus Jack began promoting the .270 Winchester avidly in the popular sporting press way back in the last century. Still works just as well today as it did back then.

I don't own a .270 but do have a .25-06. That said they are similar in powders used. 4831sc has has worked extremely well for me as well as RL19 and RL22. I'd go with the above choices.

My all time favorite .270 load with 130 NBT, (yellowtip) is 55.0 grs. of IMR4350. If I was smart enough to post pictures I would show you a 3 shot group that went .217 at 100 yards with a factory barrel.

I went out to the range today to test some rounds. I tried out varget in the rounds and they printed better than my H1000 powder. I had 3 rounds of 59.3-59.7gr of H1000 going up by .1gr each time. Then 3 rounds of 45.4-45.5gr of Varget.

I had 45.4gr Varget behind a 135 Matchking and had 2 holes halfway overlapping and the third hole was just to the left (my mess up). So far my best H1000 rounds are 59.6-59.7gr. Looks like I will tinker with the H1000 but my just use that stuff up and load with Varget.

I have reloaded for the 270 for over 30 years. I started with Jack O'Connor's favorite load, and have stuck with it. 60.0 grains of H4831 and a 130 grain bullet. I use Sierra Gameking BT.

Don't use Varget in a .270 unless you're using light bullets, it's a medium burning powder. H1000 is to slow for that cartridge. Powders to consider are,
IMR4350
IMR4831
RL19
RL22
H4350
H4831
H4831sc

There's a ton more but the above will work well.

In my reloading book it says I can use Varget in my 270 for bullets up to 140-150gr depending on the bullet manufacturer.

My last set of loads with 45.4 and 45.5 gr of Varget behind 135gr matchkings and 130gr Silvertips. The matchkings had 2 holes over lapping and the third just off to the side with both loads, the silvertips were three holes around 3/4 of an inch. My varget loads seemed to have better results than the H1000. I made up some more loads to test them out again this weekend, I will give you guys an update on how they turn out.

Ever run those Varget/130 gr. loads over a chronograph and compare them to H4831 or R22 and see how they fare?

I have not chronographed them (i don't own one), I also haven't tried the powders you listed. But they are pretty flat shooting for me. I did a three shot group at 100 and then sighted on a soap bottle at 200 and smacked it while aiming dead on. The varget rounds seem to kick less than my H1000 loads (if that means anything). But I will post an update on my reloads after this weekend on the performance of the rounds and which were accurate.

I use IMR4831 and a Winchester/Nosler Combined Technology 130 gr bullet. I have an old Rem 700 ADL and this load shoots very well in it. Use a Shepherd Scope and longest kill so far has been a doe at 475.

That man sure was my idol. I waited for each new issue just to mainly read his column.

130 gr Bronze points on heavy game...like moose...etc.

I used w760 for a long time w/110 grain vmax. Went to H4831 for velocity stability. Going to start all over w/ 90 grain sierra or speer for more reliable killing results. BAR @ the smith's now getting a tune-up.
