I shoot deer yotes elk and occasional trip to the last frontier for bear.what is your experience with this cartridge.I am a handloader .

I have one,
A Browning A-bolt Stainless-Syntec NO-Boss
I reload too
I have only use it for deer hunting, till now i got 2 with this caliber (deer around here are 120 pound field dress )
first one at 460 feet( heart shot ) and 2nd at 250 feet(neck shot )
In both case, the bullet made a real wonderful work,
I use 140gr Nosler Accubond.
I have i real good load with 74.2gr of Magpro at 3240 fps
and another one, called the one hole maker with Retumbo 71.6gr but: 3080fps.
That's a very good caliber and i like it a lot...
But i never use it on elk, I beleive under 1000 feet i could be a VG performer with a good shot placement.
BTW, i use a 130gr Bal-Tip for groundhod around here,,,héhé...
No need to tell, they cut in 2.....

Alaska Brown Bear..WOW !!
I have only one caliber in mind...338 Mag
I already own a 338 RUM but i sold it for a 300WSM..
Indeed, this kind of monster maybe need a little more autority...I'd feel confident with my 300 she's VERY versatile..
But if a had to chose one just for this..338
If you are curious, send me a PM i gonna show you the kind of damage a 300 WSM with a 165gr Bal-tip do to a Black bear...not as big as the monster.
But i shot in the neck at 250 feet...My fist goes right threw the huge hole.
With the right bullet: like 180gr Acubond, I do think i feel confident.
I shot a Huge moose at 1000 feet with this load, threw an old white cutting field...He wasnt feeling very good !
Walked only 25 feet, with blood spraying everywhere...
Thats' my story..If it can help..
BTW dont forget, I'm french..so maybe my english is so..so..
But i like to come here and read you !

I don't own a 270 WSM, but have built more than a few for people that love them. I think I would like it if I had one based on what I've heard over the years.

As far as the big bears, use a heavy bullet of your choice and have a guide with a 375 H&H to back you up.

It's a great deer/elk round. I suppose some 110's would do nicely on yotes too. I'd go bigger for large bears, for sure. I think I'd rather a 7mm WSM to my 270 WSM, if I didn't already have a lot of other rifles to choose from........

I own a Winchester model 70 coyote lite in 7mm wsm. The 270 wsm is a great deer, antelope or carribou gun. For elk or bear I would get the 7mm wsm or 300 wsm. I like the power and flat shooting traits the 7mm wsm has. The 270 wsm would work but I like more powerful cartridges.

If bear is on the menu, it probably is best to consider a cartridge with large bullet weight. I think you can kill a bear reliably with a 270 but for the occasional one that charges, bigger is better. If staying in the WSM arena, the 325 WSM is an option, you can always shoot a lighter bullet for deer but can't go the other way. Lungpopper I know you reload as I sold you a bunch of bullets a while back. The range of animals is greatly improved in greater diameter. Of course the 350 Rem Mag is another viable option. The original short mag.

Brown Bear... I too would want something with a little more "punch"... Can you say .416 Remington Mag...

Seriously, with a Brownie you cannot have too much gun...

I'm trying to negotiate a deal on a loaner... MI Abrams the next time... My .338 made him mad the first hit and the second one annoyed him even more... Third one cut through the heart and he finally laid down and died...

I'm seriously thinking about picking up a 270 WSM before the summer. It looks to shoot like a laser, and offers significantly better ballistics than the classic 270 Win.
I anticipate using it for deer and an occasional elk. Additionally, if the published ballistics are accurate, it is not underloaded as so many cartridges are these days.

Bear? Big bears??? Um, forgive me if I set everything else aside and pick up my .45-70 Guide Gun loaded with some 405 gr. hardcase bullets. They'll penetrate a grizzly or brown bear end-to-end, and are my definitive answer to large bears, T-Rex, etc. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Would a guide in Alaska take you out for Brown Bear if you were shooting a 270? If that bear is wounded the guide has to go in the bush to retrieve it.

Calcoyote

I have one and love it. I shot an antelope last year with it. It was 345 yards shooting 130 grain soft point. Hit it on the high shoulder and it folded up and didnt move. My uncle killed a nice 5 point elk this year. I think it was around 185 and it walked a few feet and tipped over.

I have one of the Win Coyotes in 7MM WSM and would love to add a 270 WSm to the family. We don't have many brown bears in S. Texas so I guess the .270 WSM will be ok. LOL!

I was torn between the 270WSM and the 7MM Rem Mag.. They're ballistically almost the same when using similar sized bullets. Wanted the ability to shoot the heavier bullets though and went with the 7MM.

I have a .270 WSM in a Browning Stainless Stalker. On top of it is a Leupold VX-II and the total weight of the rig is right at 7.5lbs. This makes it great for long walks and in the mountains. I know of three other Brownings besides mine, and they are all very accurate. I, personally, have never heard of an inaccurate Browning. The .270 WSM is a real eye-opener. When I was looking for a new gun I was only considering the standard .270 and the .30-06. My dad went to a gun auction and I told him I trusted him to get me something he though I would like. He came back with the gun described above. I was unsure at first, but I'm glad he got it. Even with such a light rifle it only recoils the same as my dad's 700 ADL in .30-06. It's fast, flat, and hard-hitting. Ballistically, it holds it own and sometimes even exceeds the 7mm Rem. and 300 Win. mags. Its main uses for me will be deer, pigs, and predators. But I'd feels perfectly fine taking it for elk, moose, caribou, black bear, sheep, goats, antelope, wolves, and mountain lion. The only things I wouldn't take it for are grizzly and polar bears. I highly recommend it and the Browning A-bolts. Good luck in getting something you like. There are plenty great guns and cartridges to choose from!
