.270wsm or 7mm mag for hog?

I am currently looking for a new caliber to replace my .308 for hog hunting. All of my hunting rifles to this point have been chambered in .308. While I love this caliber I am looking for a change. I would like something with a little more ump behind it. I am starting to get into reloading so I feel that has opened the door to exploring new calibers as well. I hunt mostly in the open fields of West Texas so I am looking for a long range, flat shooting cartridge for hogs and maybe the occasional coyote (I do have a dedicated .223 for coyote). I have been looking at the .270 wsm or a 7mm mag. I would love to here what everyone’s opinion on these 2 calibers or maybe another caliber I am over looking.

Thanks,
.308

If you took a look at the .264win mag you would be
surpised at what it can do but then there's the
7mm08 in a non-belted magnun.
Don't forget the 65x55mm. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
You sure do have alot to choose from
in the .26-.280 range. Good luck.

I don't know about the 270 WSM but my Ruger MKII in 7mag was NOT fun to shoot!! I love my 270 Win. but if I were to get a new gun in the 6.5-7mm range, it would be the 280 AI...About as versatile round as there is out there....

the 7mm rem mag has alot of ump behined it. i have shot two pretty good sized deer with mine and i still cant get over how fast they droped. i am shooting 160 gr. accubonds and i have nothing but good to say about that bullet.

I have an 30-06 and 7mm rem mag I use for whitetail. Both have taken plenty of deer. Can't go wrong with 06 but I'm partial to my 7mm.

Both should do what you want. My hunting partner has been killing elk and deer with the 7mm Rem mag for better than 20 years. Good cartridge and you can use 140 grainer's for deer and go to 160's for hogs and the 175's work great on elk.

I have one 7mm, a 280 Remington which is a fine deer gun. I use an 8mm Rem mag for elk.

Just pick a rifle you feel comfortable with, lots of dandy's out there.

Neither will do any better than a 308 on pigs, except mess up more meat. Choose the one in a rifle that fits you best. If your looking for more range I'd get a 270 winchester(lots of rifles and ammo) or 280(my choice). But neither are any better, just flatter shooting. capt david

I'd go the 7mm route. It seems that the 270 isn't getting off to as good a start as the other short mags. Much heavier bullets available for the 7mm too. Just my opinion.
