3 hogs down with the bow

guess

Someone once asked me why I didn’t bow hunt. That shooting hogs with a rifle was getting too easy for me. I told him didn’t have much use for a bow, never said I couldn’t use one. I killed these three this evening, makes 6 in the last couple of weeks. I think I need to go back to shooting them with a rifle, ammos cheaper!

It is a lot of fun with the bow !! I've got two so far that way and don't think I will use the rifle again. We don't have an infestation of pigs so I'm not trying to eradicate them. The fun part is you can shoot multiple pigs because the bow doesn't scare them away. Great job I am jealous !!

Great job, problem with bow hunting around here most of the year is mosquitoes, no way can you sit in a stand and take them buzzing all over you.

But that certainly is stealthy way to take 'em out.....

You are right about the ammo being cheaper. You can buy a 50 box at least for what it cost for 3 pack of broadheads. Lose an arrow and a broadhead, and you just tore up a $20 bill

your not kidding, even the ones I find are bent to he11, it's fun and a challenge and I commend anyone who does it, I just haven't had great success with a bow I'll stick to bowfishing over bowhogging

A question for you Guess; What broadhead are you shooting ? Arrow weight, velocity, etc. also ? I just started bow hunting and am using the NAP 100 grain Spitfires(a 3 bladed expanding) at 290 FPS on a 400 grain total weight arrow(including the broadhead). The only reason I went with the Spitfire was that it flew the same as the field point to 50 yards, as two people demonstrated for me. I'm only good enough to 40 yards right now but they group the same as my field points that far. Both shots have broken ribs and one follow up shot broke a leg. I have only bent one blade and recovered all arrows. They seem to do plenty of damage, killing both pigs. Most of my buddies only use fixed blades but they only hunt deer which aren't nearly as robust as the swine. Any insight on broadhead choice/bad experiences ?? Any info is appreciated by this newbie to pig archery.

first of all you are getting way to technical, you sound like my buddy {pyledriver on here}. HA HA. I've used the same arrows for twelve years and cant remember what the weight is on them except that they are carbon arrows 27-28 inches long with a 100gr. fixed 3 blade broad head{cheapo's} with standard tip. Now as I only had 3 arrows left,i tried some i bought for the kids to lose! i recently bought some at wally world for the kids. they are 30" 9.7 gpi carbon express with the little tiny fletching tipped with Troika ST3 broad head cut on contact fixed 3 blade. I'm drawing 55 pounds as opposed to the 80 lbs I started at. can't tell you how fast they are traveling. they are shooting within an inch of my old ones. All I care about is whether or not it hits where I want it to and does it's job. in the past 16 years I have taken home all but two hogs I've shot at. Flat missed one and lost one last week due to crossing into property I couldn't go into.

I usually go for behind the shoulder on hogs under 100 lbs and quartering away shots on big hogs. just behind the last rib and up into the chest cavity. I never get a passthrough, but generally don't need one. when you got half the arrow length sticking out, that sharp end is doing it's job on the inside. They aint goin far!

I tried the new set up on the spotted hog just to see how it would do. seemed to work fine, she ran a little farther than others only by a few yards. Used the old one's on the other 2 about the same penetration. Watched both of them fall within 60 yards.

I rarely take shots over 20 yards at an animal just personal preference. I can shoot targets out to 75 yards.

I've never used mechanical.

hope this helps.

LOL
Ya , I hear you but that's the questions they are asking me so I think I might be missing some good advice. After the double lung pass thru it ran 20 yards and stopped, facing directly away....so I took the shot that presented itself. I'm told it's called a "Texas Heart Shot". Can you confirm this ?? Ha !It broke the front leg then came back out the rear when the leg collapsed. I thought it went right thru cuz it disappeared.

well it's close to a TX heart shot. straight up the pooper is a tx heart shot works well with a rifle iffy with a bow.
