I wil be hunting in northern Ontario in the rifle hunt for deer and a chance at a black bear and possible wolf.I will be using a remington 7400 in 30-06.My question is what is a good factory round for the above situation. There is a couple fields that i can get 400 yrd shots but the normal shot is around 150 at most. Thanks for any replies PimC /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

i use the hornady 145 gr and i have the same gun, they do the job on big new york bucks,,,but that model 7400 is know as a woods gun and not known for shooting past 250 yds,i zeroed my gun @ 2.5 inches high @ 100.if you have bear in the area you may want to shoot the 165 gr,,hope this helps, good luck fooge /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

p.s make sure that you lock down barrel knob and its tight ,tight ,tight,, before you sight in,thats a weak point for that gun it loosens up if not cranked down,

165 grain Nosler partition or accubond from Federal. I say these two because of bear. Check out the ballistics on Federal's site for more info.

If you plan on using factory ammo a 140 or 150 gr Remington Corelokt is a very good load for deer, before I started reloading I was shooting an -06 and I took deer and elk with these loads.

For me, any .30 caliber gun capable of throwing a 180 grain bullet at least 2550 fps gets loaded with one.

That's just my twisted opinion though!

If I should go to using the Barnes X regularly, I'd drop to a 165 grainer though since they will retain enough weight to out penetrate many conventional 180 grain bullets.

PimC,I'm pretty happy with Federal Premium VITAL-SHOK,165gr Sierra Gameking BTSP.I've bang-flopped a couple deer with them so far.I'm sure they're gonna do a fine job on blacks as well just as soon as I see another one. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif(seen 3 while bird hunting old orchards last couple weeks, but its deer/rifle season now hehe /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif)They print 3-leaf clovers 2.5"hi@100 yds out of my 7600 pump.

I have some federal 150gr soft points at the moment but i was looking at the 165 partitions and the 180gr silverips from winchester.I just got off the phone with a guy from camp,he was up there moose hunting(not a sign)and said there was lots of bear and deer sign so i want the power to take down a good bear.Any idea how a 165 compares to a 180.Thanks for your replies you guys continue to help me with all my questions.PimC

I think that 150 grain Fed Prem will do whatever you need it to be it bear or deer.

With the range you're talking about, there is only one serious contender,165gr. My wife carries a 7400 and she shoots the 165gr Sierria Boattail that she handloads. But the 165gr is the only one that reaches out there to 400 yards consistantly, and has enough left to do the job at that range. It will also do the job on Black Bear, at closeer ranges. I personally carry a 30-06 all winter for wolves. I shoot a single shot rifle, and shoot my own handloads. 165gr Sierria boattail in front of IMR-4064. The 165gr is the only bullet that reaches out to 600 and 700 yards. I have my gun sighted in for three hundred yards.

Come on now-are you saying 150 grain, 180 grain, and some of the other sizes won't reach out? Not that I'd shoot at game at those ranges but I know they'd reach.

I had two boxes of 150gr left so i decided to get my gun sight close and then make a final decision on grains.I decided to swicth camps so i will have less range at this camp but overall much better and only 20 minutes from the other group.I was very pleased with the way the 150s shot and my range wont be any farther than 150yrds at this camp so I will stick with them for now and see how they do if i get a chance to use it.Thanks for all your replies.

PimC,

I am using hornady 150gr. SST's in front of 61 grains of hodgdon H4350. I shot a mule deer doe at 300 yds yesterday that went about 50 yds and tipped over. I also shot a mule deer buck at a little over 400 yds, and he dropped where I shot him. This was from a Savage 116 weather warrior, shooting prone with a versa pod bipod. Both shots were through the boiler room, and both passed clean through without a real big exit hole. The heart and lungs on both animals were jelly.
I guess what I am saying, is that if you can get a 150 gr. bullet into the boiler room, it'll get the job done for you.

Pim, just load for deer, the 150's or 165's will do fine, blacks can't take a hit to the vitals nearly as well as a whitetail, yep you can shoot them up with non-vital hits and they'll get away but bullet weight doesn't matter on a bad hit.

I Have always used 165 and 180 remington core lokts and have had extremly good luck with them.I have my scope about 2.5 inches high at 100 yards.good for 200 easy.im shooting a remington 700 BDL 4 pound trigger pull.BSA Catseye 4x16x50 scope.Shoots core lokts better than anything as far as factory go,s.Its what im using for black bear in virgina this season. Not to nice to little critters though(ground hogs)not many left around my house. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

A friend of mine here has taken around 15 bucks and 3 black bears with just a 243 and a 80gr bullet.
So I think what 22-250VT is saying is right on!!!

Many and many people have taken these animals that you are hunting with the good ole 270....soooo, no reason to have to go above a 150gr bullet in the '06.

Yeah, a 150 grain bullet will perform just fine for bear and wolf, though most .30-06's do love the 165 grain too. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
