30/06 with 55 grain bullets??? Is it a rumor?

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif Ok i heard a couple months ago that there were 55 grain bullets for a 30 caliber... Is this true? I heard that there was like a case around the bullet (Kinda like a .45 muzzleloader bullet in a .50 cal). I just wanted some reassurance that this probably wouldnt work! Any one know anything about this? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Yes the so called excellerators came out thirty years ago or so. They are a .224 bullet in a sabot loaded into a 30-06 case. They do give impressive velocity, but very un impressive accuracy. As I recall they can be had in 30-06, .308, and even 30-30 but expect group size to grow drimaticly with them like double or triple. So if your getting MOA with a real 06 load and bullet of 165 grains or so you can expect three to five inch groups with the excelerators.

I don't have any experience with them but I didn't think they were as inaccurate as blinddog said, could be quite wrong.

In any event, most calibers have been discontinued and ammo is very hard to find.

An interesting concept. Don

I was thinking about trying some accelerators years ago but the rumor on accuracy was too consistant. It really came down to that if I used them and if by some chance they worked well then I still don't have much use for them.

I tried some many moons ago. The rifle I shot was shooting 1 1/2" groups with 150 gr ammo. With the accelerators I could "ALMOST" hit the paper at 100 yards. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

I like them. Depends what you want to use them for and I dont think their inaccuracy is extreme for what you can do with them. Cabelas has the .30/06 Remington Accelerators and they also make them for the .30/30. Try a box for yourself and decide. Someone must be doing something with them if they have been out for 30yrs.

I have no experience with any of these. One is the Rem accelerators which you have already heard is hit or miss. The other option for reloaders comes from J and D components. I read an article in Predator extreme about them. I believe they got useable accuracy when pushed to the higher velocities. I think he tried 2 30-06's and 1 30-30. Here is a link to the web site.

J and D components
I hope this helps

Unless your rifle is unlike any I've shot Accelerators through, they'll shoot three or four times the group size that the rifle did with regular bullets. I've shot them in two or three .30-06 rifles, a couple of .308's, and several .30-30's too. I get tighter patterns from my shotguns and turkey chokes with No. 4 Buck!

.308 Accelerator is no longer available from Remington

I got a box of them and I was not found of their groups but I know they will take down a coyote at 150yds. but I guess most things will with a lot less hellabalu.

LOL

could not hit the broad side of anything with them
I used them in the 30-30 version and I even tried loading them in 300 savage a thompson contender I had..... same story..... sold all the stuff that I used to make them /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif I guess thats why we have so many different cals to fill any niche needed /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
