Ok I have a bolt action 30-30, an old Springfield 840. a very handy/short rifle. I reload, so I have some 100 grain speer Plinkers, and some 110 grain TNT loaded. It is wearing a Weaver 2 1/2 scope. I shoot it well, and have tested it extensivly on milk jugs full of water, box of soaked newspaper, and the like.

My neighbor says its way too much for preditors (Coyotes & Bobcats). He says I should be shooting a 22Mag, 223, 22-250 or a a light 25 cal.

I do have a 222 that I bought as an investment to sell at an upcomming gunshow...should I keep it and use it for predators?

Well there are a couple of possibilities here...

1) If your shots are under 150 yards and you don't care about fur, keep the 30-30 and sell the 222, or

2) If you care about fur or your shots are over 150 yards, keep the 222.

Actually the 30-30 is a fur friendly weapon in the right hands.

On any Coyote of Bobcat, you must use a 180 grain bullet and do frontal shots only. A good marksman can shoot the animal in a frontal position, striking said animal on the tip of the nose.

This will allow the bullet to blow everything out the animals rear-end, thereby d-gutting them and turning them inside of for stretching and drying.

WITH THAT BEING SAID, if you can not hit them on the tip of the nose in a frontal position, I'd keep the .222

I used a 30-30 at first because it was what I had. It is to over penetrating and you will have more animals run on you than with the 222. The 222 is also a much flater shooting round which can make it easier if you have short and long shots. The drop and rise on the 30-30 is about twice or more in some cases than the 222. Thats Just my take on it.

I have the 30-30 because it was a gift from my son...The shots are very close...under 50 yards...I have a .22Mag, but it seams a little light.

In the 222 do I want to shoot varment style bullets or hardball?

The light bullets in the 30-30 are not crazy over penatrating, but they both ran though the 2 coyotes I have taken hit with it. I will hang on to the .222. Thanks for the input

I would use v-rounds. There are guys who mainly use a 22mag at that range and due great as long as it is a good lung shot. But I would sit use the 222. and call it a day.
