300 aac or 300-221 chamber

i am in line to get a new upper from d-tech. it was going to be a 300 aac, but after doing a bunch of internet research, i am thinking that a 300-221 is a better choice. from everything i have found, the 300-221 spec for case length is 1.400", for the 300 aac it lists 1.368". it seems to me that having a longer max case length would be good, it would allow 300-221 or 300 aac in the rifle.
it seems most people would rather have the aac, maybe it sounds cooler?

Why complicate things. The 300 Blackout is a SAAMI recognized chambering. 300 Blackout ammunition is typically loaded to a higher pressure than 300 whisper or 30-221 so if you want to fire 30-221 and 300 Blackout ammunition you want the 300 Blackout chamber not the other way around.

being a SAAMI caliber does not mean much to me except maybe for resale, i have not bought any factory ammo except for rimfire in probably 2 decades or more.

It should because there is no official chamber spec for the 300-221 since it is not a SAAMI cartridge. I have seen recommended trim to lengths from 1.350 to 1.400. Chamber dimensions will vary by manufacturer. 300 Blackout will have standardized chamber dimensions.

Maybe I am looking at it from the wrong angle. What would be the possible benefits of 300-221 over 300 Blackout?

I have a 300-221 that Mike built for me. I have shot Blackout in it no problems. I got some Blackout brass from a friend that works at Remington (their plant is just a few miles from my house) and loaded it shot it no problems. All the blackout is is a project that R Silvers went on 300whisper forums and gathered information, did a little testing through AAC (Remington Company) changed the gas position from pistol to carbine mainly for super sonic rounds instead of subs (which is what the round was designed for) and got it saami.

Using the 300 blackout super sonic is just another way of bringing the 30-30 to the ar15. The 300 whisper is designed to used with a short barrel suppressed. The rest of the blackout mania is just a good marketing department.

Sorry for the rant, but most people buy the blackout and are disappointed in the range after they get it.

Practice, practice, and more practice. Here is a video of Travis Haley making repeated hits on a steel silohuette target at 750 yards with an 8 inch barreled 300 blackout using an Aimpoint T-1 from a lightly supported position.

Most people buy them for a hunting application and aren't holding over or dialing their scopes. They just buy point and shoot and using sub sonic ammo this is a 125 yard gun. maybe 200 yards with super sonic ammo. I'm not as familiar with super sonic ammo because I don't shoot it.

I never said it couldn't be shot at long ranges, it's just not a good hunting caliber at long ranges.

I tend to use things for what they are designed to do.

If your not shooting sub sonic through a suppressor it s a waste of time. That my opinion of it. It is also my favorite gun, but I only shoot is with subs and a suppressor.

+1

Add a 8-10" barrel to that quote and that is exactly what I think. I see 16" 300's without suppressors and think to myself, "why"? Then I say to myself, because they can. That's what is so great about the AR platform. It's a tinker-toy and you can build whatever you want with mostly the same pieces.

I didn't put the SBR in there but mine is 10.5". And you are right Jlindholm70.

Weak sauce indeed. Versatile rifle in the right hands, within it's limitations.

300yds with supers/ 100ish with subs are what I feel comfortable with. Perfect woods gun for me.

Plenty of medicine for deer, super quiet with subs. What's not to love?

300 BLK 125gr NBT

Edit* Waiting on my stamp for the can, no SBRs in this state.

If you want to be within +- 2.5 inches, then the max point blank range (the range that you can shoot to with no compensation or sight adjustment) is about 220 yards.

As for which chamber - you won't find any brass that is longer than 1.368. Even if you did, you cannot seat the bullet out farther anyway because of the magazine.

But also - you would have to make the barrel yourself or do a custom to even get a wildcat chamber as only 300 BLK barrels are factory sold.

Why should a 300 BLK have a short barrel and suppressor any more than 7.62x39mm or 30-30? It is good for what those cartridges are good for, except it works in AR15s, which are now the most popular rifle available.
