300 weatherby or ultra mag?

I am thinking about getting a long range rifle. I want something for elk and deer. But with plenty of kill. I am thinking 300 weatherby or 300 ulta-mag. Does anyone have any experience with either. And what about the 338 ultra-mag?

The 300 Ultra-mag with factory 180 grain ammo gives 3380 fps over my chrono compared to 3150 for the same bullet out of the Weatherby. I'm impressed with it. Recoil feels about the same to me and with a brake it shoots much like a heavy 308. I'd go with the Ultra-mag.

The 338 Ultra-mag delivers heavy bullets out to long range, but won't shoot as flat as the 300.

300 Ultra-mag on the range.

What the chrono says. Yup, that's Remington factory 180 grain ammo.

My LR deer gun is based on a 270 win case, It should have a barrel life of about 2500 rounds. its called a 6.5 Gibbs, a PITA to form cases but alot of fun to shoot.
? now is do you want to use holdover or dial the scope, with holdover you can make 500 yds, with a BDC reticle its good to about 700, if you dial your only limited by your own ability and what range your bullet remains supersonic.
The reason for this is because to 700 yds its all just simple math, beyond that the current atmospheric conditionns come into play. As far as hunting purposes, with a good bullet the game won't know the difference between the rifles you mentioned and the difference in velocity won't make much difference in trajectory either.

I would go with the 300 RUM, there is a large selection of factory ammo with premium bullets, Remington even has some loads that equate 30-06 and 300win/300wsm on the power scale, sounds like a win situation..

As for reloading the 300Rum is not finicky and works real well with all the slower powders available combined with top notch bullets like the Swift A-Frame or Barnes TSX/MRX.

I've taken a number of moose over the years with tungsten coated 180 grn. A-Frames and a healthy dose of Reloder 25 @ near 3400 fps.

This year I bought me a new Rem. 700 LSS 300RUM and worked up a load using Reloder 25 and Barnes 180 grn. MRX bullets that I coated with Tungsten Disulfide. The results were phenomenal... Really close to 3400 fps (3374 40 shot ave.)with 1/2 moa for 3 shot groups.
I had the gunsmith @ Wild West Guns in Anchorage adjust the trigger to 3 lbs. with no other alterations to the rifle.

Dropped a nice bull moose on Sept. 17th with this load.

I also own an "original" Rem 300RUM, (the first batch of stainless/synthetic 300RUM's that came out years ago) have had a lot of bullet/powder combinations that produced the magic 1/2 moa.

I had trouble trying to make my buddies 300WBY shoot 1 moa, the best we could get was 1.5 moa and the velocity was nowhere near what the 300RUM could do.

I like all those rounds but for the money it's hard to beat a 300 Win Mag.

It does everything that needs doing in North America for less money and is in just about every sporting goods store.

I shoot Barnes Triple Shock 168 grain out of mine. I don't remember the crono but I have 3100+ sticking in my mind.

That 168 is a flat shooter to boot.

If your talking real long range (700-1000 yards), I would go with the 338 ultra-mag. I have a 300winmag and have had kills on elk out to 640 yards. The drop of the bullet is the easy part when you know the range. It's the windage that is difficult and heavy 338 bullets have a better BC than the 30 cals. check out longrangehunting.com if you haven't already.
good luck

I have both a 300 RUM and a .338 RUM. I would suggest the 300 RUM over the 338. It shoots flatter and actually has more case capacity than the 338 RUM. [image]

Awesome group ya got there, I haven't tried the Accubonds in my 300Rum yet, but I've shot a bunch of similar groups with my 7.82 Warbird using 180's going over 3500fps.
