I have a weatherby vangaurd 300wm 26" 10 twist
I'm wondering what kind of barrel life I can expect. It has about 500 threw it now, mostly 180gr. @3035fps. Also what barrel would you recomend when I do replace it,I'm looking at a Krieger 29" 10 twist in heavy varminter contour. Also thinking about a brake, any tips or suggestions? Have a howa Blackhawk stock on its way.
Thanks in advance

Barrel life?? Also have to consider what level of accuracy deterioration is acceptable to you. I don't think anyone can give you a very precise answer to your question, why not contact the manufacturer? I'd think you have another 2000 rds before it really starts to go south on you.

I'd guess that someone with more experience than I would chime in shortly. Don

I built a 300-WM with a 28", 10" twist, 12 groove barrel - 700 action, an H-S stock. It weighs 14.7 pounds with a Leupold MK4-M3 scope.

It is pleasant to shoot, and max loads are not necessary to hit at long ranges - I run Sierra 190 SMK's at 2950 and the loads are light.

I would NOT get a break - or your friends will stop shooting with you.

I have heard they make it quite loud.
I have not tried the smk's yet but my rifle shoots the noslers very well.

Did you do the build your self? I have not read any reviews on local gunsmiths yet but I'm thinking I have plenty of time before I need to rebarrel. I have heard win mags are barrel burners but have not seen any decline in accuracy yet, only thought id get others exp on the matter since I noticed inm half way threw my first case of primers. thanks

This may be true, but I'd rather have the brake...

My rifle is 10.6# and with 180 g. load at 3100 fps it has less recoil then my 11.8# 25-06 Sendero.

Recoil hasn't bothered me(I'm a big guy conditioned for punishment) just figure any recoil reduction would help keep target in the scope after the shot.

I love it! I never shoot with anyone any way, so it doesn't make much difference. Even with a 208 grain Amax at 2900 my target stays right in the center of the scope...

Most of my shooting is done alone but I'm wanting to get in to competition shooting. 500-1k. Well see how this stok helps and go from there

I bought the 12 groove barrel with my fingers crossed, cuz it had no makers name on it - it turned out to be a gem!

I fitted the barrel on a borrowed lathe, and did the rest of the work, except painting the stock (it is painted, H-S Sand and Spinach)

As to being a barrel burner... they are about as bad as a 270 Win.

The barrel will last if you don't go out of your way to abuse it.

Muzzle breaks really do help with recoil reduction, but as Heinlein said, "there's no free lunch". The muzzle blast is directed backward and to the side. My BIL had a Savage package gun in .300 Win with a break. Standing behind him at the range when he pulled the string. Obnoxious is the only word I can describe. He lost the hearing in his left ear when he pulled the trigger on a goat up in the Brooks Range with the rifle. There was a shelf on his left side and a canyon on the other. The sound reflected off the shelf and that was that. He got the goat though, but does not think it was worth it.
If you do use a break, use earplugs and muffs. Some use the break for practice but remove it for hunting.

I can hear well enough with plugs that I'd use them anytime I was hunting. I normally use plugs and muffs for anything I shoot at the range other than a .22LR rifle. For that, plugs suffice.

Last time I fired a shot w/o ear protection was one shot with a .45ACP. Didn't intend to do so but regretted it.

I think AR-15s with flash hiders are really obnoxious and won't even go near them w/o double protection. Need it be said that once damaged, hearing never returns? Don

I always wear plugs when I shoot,my ears are precious to me

Muzzle breaks are way too loud. My buddy shot his braked 338 one time at an elk, it was a do or die situation, well he didnt make it very far away from the horses and touched one off and the horses freaked out, and these were horses that were used to being hunted with, but that boss break was so loud it was crazy. Once back to town the brake got cut off.

I talked to a gunsmith last week and he had tried these tubes that were filled with some kind of fluid and they put them inside of your stock and he claimed they worked as good as a brake and they were cheaper and you didnt get the noise.

I have a Vias break on my 300WM and increased the accuracy. Yes, it's loud but it was loud to begin with. Love that 300!

My experience with the mercury filled recoil cylinders is that they're mostly useless. What little reduction in recoil they achieve, is I believe, simply due to their additional weight. I've had two in my Ruger No. 1 in .458 Win Mag. Don
