.300 Win Mag

I have a friend who has a 300 Win mag and was curious as to if a 150 gr bullet would work good for deer without doing too much damage? I don't hunt deer so I couldn't answer him. He would like a bullet good for deer and coyote. I don't think the 150 would be a problem at all, maybe he could go lower yet. Any answers?

I haved used the 150's in the past in my 300 Win Mag but didn't like the results on deer, but it was an thin jacketed bullet(ballistic tip). Some of the new bonded type bullets may be ok. I switched to the 165's and like them, but the 180's seem to have less meat damage than either on deer. But I haven't used the 300 in over 10yrs, and there have plenty of changes in the bullet world since then.

I can't help you either. I only use Nosler 180gr Partitions. I use them for Antelope, Deer and Elk. They shoot so well out of my rifle I haven't tried anything else. Key

This is one of the only times I would actually recommend some of bullets manufactured by Barns. The 150 TSX normally will not come apart even at close range at 300 Win Mag velocities. Other bonded bullets in the 150 weight class will do ok, but a 25 yard shot will still make a mess. Bullets of conventional construction can get pretty nasty at less than a hundred yards or so. Unless you are saving pelts, a 8.8 cm FlaK 18 should work even better on yotes.

I don't hunt deer so I really don't know as I said. I told him maybe 165 but didn't know. He don't shoot the rifle much anyways so I would bet 20 rounds would do him for a long time.

Of course, it also depends on how nice of a fellow he is. You could load him some 150 Speer SBTs or NBTs over a max charge of IMR-4350 and tell him to only take center mass shots.

pcammo, that sounds like fun. He needs to put a scope on this rifle, and then find the time to sight it in. He wants to bow hunt and I'm trying to get him into that but this guy is busy 24/7 and then some. I did get him and his daughter to come out one weekend to hunt coyotes, and then he tells me today that was the first time in 2 yrs since he has bought the gun that he actually used it. I'm not getting too excited for now but this guy is a really reliable guy and I would do anything for him or his family. I wonder what my 125 Nosler ballistic tips would do.....

That would be impressive. I have not killed anything with 125 NBT, but I have killed a few gray squirrels with the 110gr. Sierra HP from a 300 RUM at 4050fps. They just evaporate.

Let's see, he lives in Kansas and works 24/7. First time in two years he's shot the rifle. Excuse me, first time he has shot it since he bought it,2 yrs ago and still needs to put a scope on it. Sounds to me like a guy that would be a lot better off with a 243 or 25-06. I'm guessing that if he does go deer hunting, you may well be there with him. Don't know what kind of rifle it is but he should be able to trade it for a decent 243. Then he'd have something he'd probably enjoy shooting more and for sure his daughter would.

He has iron sights on it. His daughter can out-shoot him with his own 30-30. She shoots the .300 also. He grew up in Colorado in the mtns and is use to iron sights. Its a nice rifle from what I can remember. I'm just going to try and help him all I can, I know he would do it for me.
