Well,
It's that time of year again; birds are singing, flowers are blooming and thoughts of new guns are dancing in my head! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Does anyone have any experience with either , 300wsm or .325wsm ? I would like to put a larger cal. in the safe.
I will using it from time to time on big game, I hope!
Like moose, mulies, whitetail, elk, And in my wildest dreams plains game in Africa. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif
I have used .300 win mag before , but I like short action better. Any proven opinions would be helpful.
Thanks.............Tim

Both should be excellent choices. I've got the 300 in a M70 Coyote and my brother has a .325 in a M70 featherweight. Both have great power and accuracy. I have not tested either on on african game, however they both will bring down white tailed deer like a lightning bolt!

If Africa lies in your future, I'd recommend the .325. I used my .338 Win on my two safaris and didn't feel overgunned. If you don't have anything in the midbore range (.280-.338), the .325 would make a nice all-around rifle to fill that niche.

I have a 300WSM Mod70 and dearly love it. I guess it just depends on what you plan on using it for. I have mine loaded pretty hot with 150gr Partions. It is one flat shooter for Plains Whitetails and Aoudad.
Remington is building WSM's now so I would go that route. My Model 70 sure has one sweet action.

Remind me, what will the 325 do that the 300 will not do better? Does the 8mm have a better selection of bullets?
does the 8mm have a better sectional density? Is the 8mm available with substantially heavier bullets ? Is the ballistic coefficient of the 8mm bullets superior? Personally I cant comprehend any advantage of 325 over 300 WSMs.
Just one man's opinion.

Both are great choices. The 300 shoots flatter, has a better selection of bullets, and hits just as hard at longer ranges. The 325 hits harder at close to moderate ranges, and obviously has a fifteen thousandths bigger diameter bullet. The 325 is probably more effective on game larger than mule deer under 200 yards. I would base my decision on what would broaden my arsenal selection.

I just bought a Winchester model 70 Featherweight chambered in a .300wsm. I always wanted to get another model 70 and thought I should get one while I can. I didn't realy think about which caliber since, as far as I know they only offered three calibers with a lefthand bolt. 270wsm, 300wsm and 7mmwsm.

If I were to choose between a 300wsm and the 325wsm, I would choose the 300wsm. I have no experience with either one these calibers but, a 300wsm shooting bullet wieghts from 110 grains to 220 grains, the 300wsm seems to be a more versatile cartrige and should be suitable for any of the North American big game animals.

What I have now is ;
1. 22lr
2. 17hmr
3. 17 rem
4. 223 rem
5. 243 win
6. My favorite big game weapon - Hoyt V Tec

So, here is where the WSM comes in as back up .
Some days I just got put the bow down , and knock a big hole in something! LOL

As far as Africa goes, If I quit buying guns and save $$.
In 50yrs I'll go !LOL I guy has to dream right?

Thanks for the input everyone!

I'd go 300 WSM. It is a substantial jump compared to what you have and will do the deed just fine on every critter you mentioned. It is here to stay. 325 WSM? Probally not. As others have pointed out there really isn't much of a difference between the two. I'd go with a 338 WM if looking for more than a 300Mag.

For years my largest rifle topped out at 308's. With some possible upcoming hunts for larger game (elk & Black bear) I entertained the thought of a new round. While a big fan of the 308 I wanted to go a little larger. I did some quick research & bought an A-Bolt hunter in 300WSM. I am not a big fan of heavy guns and I liked the 23" barrel & trim weight. I got the less expensive wood & blued since I probably will not use it a whole lot. Of all the new cartridges lately the 300WSM has caught on well & as a handloader you can load it down below a 308 if desired. The site shortmags.org has plenty of information. After looking there you will realize you need one.

I loaded up some 165 & 180 grn rounds with H4350 but have not tried out my new 300WSM yet at the range. I also mounted a Nikon monarch 2-7 on it.

325.WSM. I love my A-bolt Browning. From deer to griz, it will get er done. Hopefully well have a better selection of ammo this year.

Here is the payoff from my 325 this year;

Those of you that have shot either .300wsm or .325wsm.
How is the recoil ? I know the .300win mags I have shot can make a shoulder tender! I like the results and looks of a muzzle break, But they sure are loud!

Nice buck Dave! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Its snappy but not unpleasent. My 15 year old nephew touched mine off a few times and it did not bother him. I liken it to a little more than my 270. My 325. is very accurate right out of the box with 1 inch 100 yard groups. I do intend to do a little trigger work though over the summer. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Thanks Tim,

I've always considered the 300mags to just add a a little distance to the 30-06. I can't see much need for them unless one desires and has the ability to make shots over 300yds. I think that if one needs a bigger gun than a 30-06, one should go with a bigger bullet, not more powder. With that in mind, I'd go with the 325, or given the choice maybe a 350RM. capt david
