300 yard .308 group ?

I am wondering what you guys would consider to be a good group at 300 yards.I am just getting a Savage 10fp in .308 broke in with 168gr HpBt Sierra's and 44gr of Varget. It has a 6.5-20x50 Vortex Viper on it and I'm shooting off of a bipod and folding table.I have not done much paper punching at distance.I'm more of a 100 yard zero and go punch holes in fur type.Any thoughts?

This was my first 5 shot group at 300+ There was one flier but I am excited about how it has shot so far.I thought it seemed like a good group (4 anyway) but this is a first really for me so thanks for the input.

Why a 100 yard zero? Look up point-blank zeroing and work it out for your desired target zone size. Gives you the longest distance you can hold dead-center and still hit.

With #1 being likely user error, either in hold or in reload or in wind reading, the rest of them form a great group. Savages are typically shooters. My Savage .308 likes the 180 Sierra Gamekings and really likes the 185 Berger Hunting VLD's at long range.

You're on your way. I would challenge myself to produce 1" and under now that you got this .5 moa thing going on. Good luck.

Colorado Pete,I will look into that for this gun being that it was to be mostly a range/paper puncher. We rarely get shots here on critters farther than 200 yards just because of the lay of the land and cover. My goal is to shoot 600yds so I will keep at it,and keep moving out and see how it goes. Thanks for the comments guys!!

Shooting like that at 300 makes 600 alot easier.

Good luck

Noticed your flier was labeled shot #1. If that is correct sequence, it is common for a rifle to put the first round through an unfouled barrel to have a different POI quite than following shots.

Good shooting!

I'm happy for the amount of rounds fired and the group so far.I don't know why but I assumed the 168s would be the best bet and picked up 3 boxes. The BC is .480 and they are match grade the box says.Sounded good to me,but it would have been a better idea to try a range of weights I'm sure. Thanks,Mike
