Looking at buying a 16" blkout for my kids to deer hunt with. 2 options available are a pistol and carbine length gas. Which one is the better option ?

I would go with carbine I find it to be smoother operating with less recoil I was unaware they built a 16 in 300 blackout with pistol length gas system. If you were to install a suoerlative arms adj gas block that 300 would be like shooting a 22 rim fire great shooter for those just learning to shoot.Awesome cal choice for the kids and don't under estimate a 300black out ability to take deer.If you can hunt deer in your state witrh a 556 ar rock river has complete 16 in upper for $280.00 a quality upper for that price! There are a lot of bargains on ar15 these days.Good luck witch ever way you go.Tthe kids will love it Nice Job DAD!

Midway has really really really good barrels in 300 Blackout. I used the 16" chrome moly with a pistol length gas system. Most seem to prefer pistol length for the best cycling of all rounds in the rifle. Carbine gas system may cycle some and others not so well. I haven't had anything not cycle in my rifle yet and it shoots sub MOA with 110 Vmax @ 2400 fps & 150 grain SST @ 2100 fps. Stainless 16", carbine gas was $99 and the 16" chrome moly, pistol gas was $59 on sale!!!

a carbine gas barrel from any reputable manufacturer should function just dandy. my rifle upper is a carbine gas and i can shoot all four ways no issues

supersonic suppressed
supersonic unsuppressed
subsonic suppressed
subsonic unsuppressed

having a pistol gas system would only allow me to choose more powders as a reloader for subsonics, and even then its probably only 4-6 more options at best due to gas volume production issues with the faster powders.

so for you, i'd probably suggest the carbine length gas system if they're gonna just be hunting with it.

the issue with a pistol gas system, running supers they tend to be easily over-gassed. so you almost *need* an adjustable gas block to tune them based on how you plan to shoot. pistol gas 16" barrel supersonic suppressed its pretty much 100% guarantee you'd need one.

man you are running both of those loads a wee bit on the warm side! that is downright cooking out of a 16" barrel. i'm not saying those numbers are impossible, but i imagine you're only getting a few firings before your primer pockets are blown out and unusable.

Brass life has been fine. I'm making brass out of old work hardened 5.56 with split necks and old 6x45 brass I don't have a gun for anymore. I really wouldn't even say the primers are that flat... 20 grains of little gun and a 110 Vmax with a good hard crimp over CCI 400's.

Mine is a 16" pistol length, and I think that gas length gives the action more breathing room due to longer pill transit time from gas port to muzzle.
Also don't see much change due to can vs no can in cycling of supersonics.

MPFD: That's my goto load but with CCI #34 & a good crimp, same kind of speed.

If it's a hunting rig, I'm gonna assume you're running supersonic ammo. If that's the case, carbine gas works great. I have the 16" AR Stoner barrel from Midwayusa. It shoots extremely well with 125 grain speer TNT's and H110. If you're using it for deer, the 125 grain Sierra ProHunter might be a better choice.

X2 Great advice.

I bought a 16 inch to shoot subsonic it has a pistol length gas tube.
Also bought a carbine gas tube length, 16 inch upper for the faster stuff.
JoeBobOutfitters is 100 % correct.
