Hey guys, I was given a box of 308 110gr Varmageddon's and want to load them for my daytime calling gun(Rem pump 308). I have H4198 & H4895 to play with. Have any of you used these powders with 110 gr bullets?? If so How did they do? I don't need bench accuracy as my shots will be inside the woods at 50-100yds..

Not quite there yet, but H4895 getting moa groups out of my BAR. Very possibly me, as trigger sucks.

As usual, start low & work up.

That would be more than adequate for me in my pump gun. It shoots well after some work, but in the end...still a Pump gun with a hammer trigger.
Any idea on your velocity? I want the lowest flash/recoil possible for getting back on target (hence the pump)for multiples in tight woods calling scenarios. Last season I called in 12 at once and several sets of groups of 2-4. I have a handicapped right arm which prevents me from uplifting a bolt without bringing rifle down, so the pump seemed like the next progression after hating the AR platform I used last season. I think most of it is my limitation and the difficulty pistol grip or thumbhole stocks give me..

Anyways..I know H4895 can be loaded down and am pretty sure guys get good accuracy with it when loaded down for youth loads etc..

IF I hear that H4198 is probably a waste of my time, I'll most likely go with a starting load of H4895 and work up/down until I get decent accuracy and velocity above 2800fps or so..

Years ago, I used H322 with 110g sierra.

Since, I have switched to the speer TNT, Win 748, amazing accuracy and speed.

I cut a coil off the hammer spring of Rem 1100's and 7400's...works like a charm.

I had a trigger job done by a guy who specializes in Rem pumps out of PA(home of amish machine guns..lol)and it's a pretty crisp 2.5# break with far less creep(about1/16 vs 1/4" factory). I've shot 1" groups with it using match grade ammo, but honestly it's never going to be better than that. I've also had the barrel cut/crowned at 18.5" and have a 1.5-4.5 Leupold Firedot on it for Hogs/Bear and now coyotes..

I know that standing or sitting without a rest or sticks, I can put 3 inside 6" @ 100yds with rapid fire. Of course I could do the same with the AR in 350 legend, but for ME the pump comes to aim and points much, much quicker and naturally than the AR platform.

I use a .243 for open terrain, but I think the 7600 is a pretty good tight cover gun. I've considered buying a second in .243 if I can't find a decent load out of the .308.
I don't save pelts so just looking for body count on multiples..lol

I'm guessing 31-3200 based on Nosler data. My Pact chrono bit the dust and no CS available.

Yes, we downloaded 4895 for our club's juniors shooting Garand matches with good results.

Both of them powders work good in 308's with 110's.

I like AA 2015 also. Both my 1 in 12" twist barrels love the 110 V-max with 46 H 4895 or 44 2015.

I have tried tH4198 too and it shot good also, don't remember the charge but it was not a maximum

load either.

Thanks..I think I'll give 36-40gr of H4198 a try as I have no other use for it since selling my 444 Marlins... I'll go to H4895(I use for all my other .308 loads) IF I can't get

I believe my 1903 Springfield .30-06 has 1:10 twist. I used H335 for the 110gr Sierra HP and got 3/4" groups. Then I messed with the OAL and brought the groups down to 5/16". So, consider changing the OAL if you want to tighten your groups some more. BTW, the 110gr HPs are NOT fur friendly (nor are the Speer 130gr HPs).

Your 1-10 will be fine, and I'd about bet 1.5" will be easy with almost any combination. I know H4895 with a 110 vmax was a really accurate combination in my last 308s. I've never messed with the 110 nosler, but the vmax is a really accurate bullet in everything I've tried it in, from 30 Rem AR to 300 Saum, and they were all 1-10 btw.

1:10 is a very popular twist w/lots of 308's & '06's and will handle the 110's just fine. I believe that is the twist on the BAR .308. I hunted jackrabbits with a couple of old o3A3's for years with 93gr "plinkers" (Hornady IIRC). They were a half jacket .308 bullet and they flew out of the old Springfields....fast & accurate.

I'm hoping the H4198 gives me decent groups as I would think it would have the least recoil/muzzle blast out of my light 18.5" barreled pump. I'm speculating that the 110 Varmageddons will hit them hard even at lower velocities. My hope would be to end up with an accurate load in the 2800-3000fps range to still ensure hydrostatic shock with the least muzzle rise/fastest back on target time..

So I loaded up some 40.0gr & 42.0gr of H4198 with the 110 Varmageddons.. Strangest thing is that I only got consistent 1800fps with 40.gr and 1900fps with 42.0gr??? Nice 3 shot groups about 8" low of my 168gr loads zero...so this is a genuine unexplained low velocity(Also felt like a .223 Rem).
Obviously something is amiss and only thing I can think of is the powder...

Either way I've wasted enough time with it and will be loading up some H4895 loads for my next try...

It is entirely possible that my chrono could be faulty. I will shoot a couple other known loads across it to eliminate this possibility tomorrow. the more I think about it the more I think it's a high possibility.
I honestly hope it's just the chrono as the few rounds I shot had very little blast/muzzle rise and would make a great hardwoods calling load in my pump..

I am loading up some H4895 loads in case it's not the chrono..

The issue turned out to be a combo of my shortened barrel and my chrono being too close..After moving it back another few feet, I began getting legitimate numbers. I loaded some h4198 and h4895 loads. The H4198 shot OK with best 100 yd groups of 1.75”@3145fps, and the H4895 loads shot much better @1.1” @3165fps.
For this rifle(a pump) the H4895 is a winner.
I hated to use the 4895 up...but you gotta feed them what they like, not what you want..lol

Heck yeah try it, it works great with 125's so it's worth a shot for sure. It's a bit on the slow burning side for 110's but it should work fine.
