308 bullets in 7.62x39

I'm wondering if the slight difference in diameter will make a big difference in accuracy. Also, is there any place that sells reloadable brass that don't break the bank?

My club gave me an appreciation check for the work I have been doing at the club. I used it to buy the Howa. Its the heavy barrel in the Kyrptec stock. With Wolf 122 gr HP's it was cutting holes at 100yds. Not every time but the accuracy was pretty amazing for cheap ammo. $11 for 40 rounds. Never felt a rifle cycle rounds out of a mag as smooth as the Howa does. Neat little rifle for sure.

Yes it will. I've made up some Mexican Match using 308 bullets that wasn't impressive but I haven't really tried to work up loads to be authoritative on it.

I've seen it on the net but sleuthing will be needed. I got a batch from a range in Oklahoma on a deal.

I found a place last night that had once fired mixed head stamp brass pretty cheap but didn't write it down. Now I can't seem to find it today.

Check your history from yesterday. Not being a smart a$$, just trying to help.

I have a 7.62x39 Ruger I'm going to try some .308 reloads in tomorrow hopefully, as well as some .310 varmageddons. I'll post how it goes when I get done.

If you find that site that had the 39 brass, please post it.

the hornady 123gr zmax is an amazing bullet, and comes out of the box at .310.

just a friendly tip, this bullet is actually a 123gr SST (same bullet as the zmax above too), that for some reason graff's private labels and sells as a VMAX. (just to be confusing)

these used to come on sale all the time around 26 cents or so. this is a GREAT hunting bullet at x39 speeds and tend to be very accurate.

however for plinkers. this is probably gonna be hard to beat for a quality constructed bullet at 21 cents per

I've not tried .308 bullets in any of my supposed .310 guns (AK/SKS), but from my research, it seems that even guns that are supposed to be .310, there are groove to groove diameter differences sometimes. Not sure which ones, but I think some new guns are made with .308 barrels to "cure" the bullet issues? From what I've seen, Greg is right in that reports are all over the map on accuracy, but for plinking, I dont think there's any harm in shoving a .308 bullet down a .310 bore?? I find it interesting that 7.62x39 import ammo is sooo cheap loaded (~$5/bx/20), and bullets alone for that cal. are ~$0.20/pc or $4/20 pc!?!?!?! And .308 bullets are cheaper at times, esp in pulls and blems??? You generally cant load 7.62x30 for anywhere near the price of the Russian stuff, but if working towards consistent accuracy, of course loading your own is the way to go.

With just 30 rounds down the barrel of the Howa, it was getting sub 1 inch groups at 100yds with Tula HP bullets. I just gots to know what a good reload is gonna do!!

Well, I made it to the range today, and got to try some various loads in my Ruger American 7.62x39.

The .308" Sierra went into about a 3" group. So I think that experiment is over.

The .310" Nosler Varmageddons gave me a couple 5 shot groups at approximately 1".

I will be doing some more work with them.

H335 seemed to show a lot of promise.

Two things about ordering from Pro Shop. Their shipping is a bit pricey, probably wouldn't pay to order just one box, I usually order at least $100 worth of bullets to spread out shipping (IIRC it's $13 or so).

The other thing is to set up an account and get vetted so as to take advantage of their military discount; helps take the sting out of shipping costs.

I shoot Nosler blems/overruns nearly exclusively; can't remember finding a blem over the years and they shoot lights out and perform on game just as the "good" ones.

Just ordered my first blemished cases (.338 WM) from them; will see if that holds true on the cases as well as bullets, but I'd bet it does.

ETA: Be sure and sign up for their email sales fliers. The last one offered double military discount over veterans day weekend.

Regards,
hm
