.308 Loads

Varget and what you want to shot in front of it.Hunting wise I was shooting 165 SS with 45 grains Varget. Hitting paper or long range 168VLDS with 45.5 grns Varget.

175 gr. Sierra Match King, 44.6 gr. of Varget, Federal large rifle primer. You can test match primers also. I almost guarantee it will shoot 1 hole groups with this load in a 26" barrel.

Same load as above with 44.8 gr Varget works really good in 20"&24" barrels also.

Of course this is an awesome 1000 yd load, haven't shot a coyote with it yet. A couple of shooting buddies that I turned onto this load said they have, but I couldn't verify the results.

Another friend who is an avid coyote hunter loads 110 gr.(don't know what bullet or powder) for coyotes and said it is definately lethal on them but not fur friendly

Get the reacurring theme here. Pick a good bullet that weighs in the range that you want to shoot and work up a load with Varget. Dont be afraid to run heavy bullets in the 308. We push the 208 grain A-max to 1000yards here and get pretty good results. Doesnt leave the barrel that fast but it runs out good in the long game.

Pretty big guarantee there, also what does the 26" barrel have to do with anything. We run 20" barrels on ours and accuracy is not an issue at all and with the heavy bullets and Varget are only losing 10 fps per inch. I will give up 60fps anyday in order to have a gun that is friendly to tote around.

Just to give you a different opinion, my 700 shoots very small groups with Reloader 15 (a grain or so below max) and Hornady 150 gr. BTSPs.

Now this is exactly why I just read and almost never post.

I said almost guarantee a one hole group. The reason I said that is because it has in every 26" barrel I have tried it in, or know of, that it was tried in, including a couple of friends rifles. I'm not the whiz kid that came up with it either, I found it in a rather large forum dedicated to long range shooting. You've probably been on it also, especially since they have been shooting the 208 AMAX for distance quite a few years now.

A 26" inch barrel has alot to do with it since he asked for loads for a MOD 700 Varmint. They, by the way they have a 26" barrel. I posted what I did because said load, works very well in a 26",pretty good in a 24". It does not seem to do as well in a 20" barrel. Again, this info was picked up from others who have had the same results.

I won't disagree with you on a 20" barrel vs. a 26" as far as toting around, however my 24" barrel Accuracy International weighs more, and is harder "to tote" than my 26" Mod 700 Varmint was, which also had an Acc. Int. stock on it. I wasn't trying to talk him into a 26" barrel, he already has it. I'm also not trying to talk you into one. As a matter of fact I've had aLL 3 lengths and I like them all for different reasons.

I also never stated that there is an accuracy problem with a 20" barrel. I have found them to be extremely accurate.

I haven't tried the 208 Amax's, so I can't say one way or the other but there is definately more than 10 fps difference per inch of barrel in the loads I've chronographed out of numerous barrels, YMMV.

So, in conclusion I was just trying to give the guy a load that has worked well for me and others in a 26" barrel, not get into a pi**in' match.

Have a good one.

Lapua brass full length resized trimmed to 2.005, Fed 210 primer, 175SMK pushed by 44.5 gr of varget average speed 2740 out of my rem 700 sps varmint/ have found out shooting 168 gr SMK are inconsistent past 700 yards though. as Z said IMR4064 with 168s are very accurate also.
