.308 reloading?

i am trying to get started in reloading, i do not have any manuals yet but would like to try 40gr vmax for .223 & 110 vmax for .308
i am not looking for the absolute best load possible, but would like to get started with the best cost effective load & work into accuracy.

i am looking for help on powder choices that would work on both calibers- if there are any? i have a press & both sets of dies available just looking to get started for $100 & if the powder will work on both then i think im in my budget with bullets, primers & powder atleast for 50 rds of each or close to it.

this is a newbie ? so go easy

I know it begins to sound redundant but personally I would work on changing the statement above.
 
Do yourself a big favor and spend the money on a couple of good manuals, I would suggest Hornady and/or Speer you might also want to get Loadbooks in the chamberings your loading If you get just one manual either of the two will be good, and will give you a wealth of Knowledge beyond just charge data. The load books are powder and charge specific for the chambering. Basicly they have reprinted all the charge data from all the bullet and powder makers. Don't neglect a manual though since both Hornady and Speer give a lot of step by step info on the process of handloading.

Internet hearsay (no matter how well intentioned), is a poor substitute for a reloading manual. Just a simple typing error could be disasterous.

Truthfully,,,,,the thought of starting out reloading without one is a bit frightening.

I know you're on a budget and don't mean to insult you, but reloading can go bad in a hurry if not approached carefully.
 
I use Ramshot TAC for both 223 and 308. I loaded some 110 gr. V-Max and Sierra 110 gr. HP's using 49gr. of TAC the other day for coyotes both bullets are extremely explosive and very accurate.
 
skinzoo21..i realize money's tight for most all of us..when ya got a extra $20-$30 buck's go buy a reloading manual /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gifi have three..lyman 48th edition..nosler 6th edition..speer #14..i almost bought the new hornady the other night..probably still will..anyway i use all three.. i consider them invaluable /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

i plan on getting the hornady to start with, and probably will before i actually start reloading just wanted to get alittle info to see if i could save by getting the same podwer
 
skinz0021..sound's like your on the right track..it's kinda dry reading..but i actually enjoy reading them..it's really nice just to flip thru the page's & check for powder's & different weight's of bullet's used ect..i much prefer a book..vs..looking @ a website..
 
H335 is a good choice as well for both.

I intend in the very near future to also try the W748 in the .308 to see how it does. The W748 is very accurate in the .223.
 
I use HOD-380 in both calibers.It works well but it will fill the case up.Some people don't like to use a compressed loads but in that powder it works will for me.

First lesson: the reason you start reloading is for the absolute best load possible, then you may appreciate some cost savings. You will actually spend more once you start reloading as you will shoot more. It is a terrible addiction.

If you are on a budget, the Rem bulk bullets shoot very well and save a few bucks over the Vmax line. Varget is a fantastic powder for many things, everyone should have a pound on the bench.
 
i went to sportsman's warehouse tonight & picked up the hornady 7th edition /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif that's manual#4 for me..i prefer to look up my own information..now somebody stop me i'm out of control /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
 
i just missed a hornady on the classifieds for $20 wish i had internet @ home, for now i just get on my phone & thats like having dail up!
