308 Winchester 18 inch 1x10 twist barrel powder choice.

Looking to start doing some loading for this barrel, I will be using 150 grain bullets. My question is what powder will allow me to gain some of the velocity back I am loosing from the short barrel.

2nd vote for 3031 . I did a load workup years back with LMT 16" .308 . Was getting good performance and groups using it with the shorter barrel length.

Varget similar in burn rate/bulk as 4064. Both the 4895s somewhat faster, then comes the 3031 & Benchmark pairing. A bit faster yet is the 2015. The original 308 Gold Medal match load was 3031 with 168s, plus I swear 3031 runs slightly cooler, with less recoil.

Xterminator is very close to 3031 and Benchmark on the burn chart. Very available and gives great groups out of my 30TC(very similar case capacity).

H4895 and Benchmark are both extreme powders that are very temperature tolerant.

The 18" barrel and rifle length gas system was a very good choice. Another 50-100fps really means F all when shooting a low BC bullet at moderate speeds at moderate distances.

You will likely find accuracy, case fill and consistency ease your mind more than chewed up, over pressure cases.

Have a look at IMR 4895, H4895, R15, Varget and N140

W748 will get you high velocities and good accuracy. PP2000 will also, but will wreak havoc with gas system timing as it is so slow.

For whatever reason I have had best luck with N140 and IMR 4895 and Reloader 15 (Nothing special about velocities though)
