I've had the 150gr Rem fail on two deer, both were recovered so I'm sure the bullet failed to do it's job they both explode on the surface with only a few shards of copper making it into the lungs and the other exploding in the throat on a head on shot never making it into the chest cavity. For stand and open country I like the 165gr Sierra GK and still hunting in thick cover the 180gr RN.
I have shot many whitetails with 150 gr rem core locks in 308, it's my favriote load. Shoulder shot, lung shot, frontal shot, close by, far away, big deer and many others., never had a problem.
If you're required lead free, I like the TTSX. A 130 in the 308 would be great.
Otherwise, the Rem Core-Loct and the Federal Fusion are what I have used in the past with great results. I will be using Sierra GK 165 HPBT for the next outing. Those are some great, tough bullets (according to my research). The skived HP is said to hold together real well.
Pahntr,
I don't think the HPBT is any tougher than the regular flavor boat tail Game King. In fact, last year I shot a 115 pound whitetail doe broadside just a touch behind the armpit with a 165 gr. HPBT from a 20" barrel .308 Winchester from a handload that probably just breaks over 2,600 fps from about sixty yards distance and recovered the bullet jacket under the hide on the offside near the exit hole. The core punched a nice exit and the deer did exactly what it was supposed to, die very quickly. But that jacket stripped off that supposedly tough bullet a little too easily. I've shot somewhere a bit over two dozen deer with the Sierra 165 gr. Game King BT & HPBT from .308 Winchester and .30-06 rifles and can't tell the slightest difference between the two. I'm not being critical of the bullet because they are very accurate and very suddenly terminal. However, I've read all that stuff about the one being tougher than the other and I haven't seen it personally.
I and most of my family have used Rem Core-Lokt for decades. we have piled up the deer and elk, coyotes and grouse. Never a failure. Almost always one shot and the tag is filled.
I have found them to be plenty accurate in every rifle we have ever used. All this from a relatively inexpensive load.
There are praises for this load all over the net.
Most of these factory loads with solid copper bullets seem to cost way more than lead core ammo. Is that what we have to look forward to here in Kali?
Thanks...

Hand loading will be your friend, if you shoot all copper
bullets. I load 130 gr. Barnes Tipped Triple Shocks, for
a couple of 308 Win chambered rifles. If you don't count
the cost of brass, I load these rounds for around $1/round.
Not only do you get quality Cali-compliant ammo, you get
it at ~50% of factory ammo, and you can tune it for your
rifle. Not too expensive then.

Yes it is. If and when the whole state goes Lead Free the solid copper Lead Free Bullets do cost at least 3 times more than the lead core bullets do. It looks like the loaded factory Lead Free ammo is close to costing twice as much as lead core ammo.
The Barnes 130 gr TTSX bullet is a great big game hunting bullet for the 308 Win. It is pretty fast in the 308 and it gets plenty of penetration.
I really like the Hornady Superformance 150 sst's. If you have to use a copper bullet something loaded with a barnes tsx/ttsx and Hornady makes a gmx which is very similar is the way to go. There are a bunch of ammo manufactures that use the tsx\ttsx bullets or load your own. I have had great luck with both!

What isn't more expensive in the state of Califorication?
