32 Colt

My neighbor inherited a Colt model 1 in 32 long. He can't find ammo in 32 long but did come up with 32 ACP and asked me if it would work. I didn't know and compared the two rounds and the ACP did have a bit smaller rim so I told him to wait until I found out. So, will the 32 ACP work in his Colt 32 long? BTW, this is one sweet little gun and best I can tell has never been fired. My advice was to leave it unfired and boxed up in the safe.

The Colt 32 long is a rimmed cartridge and the 32 ACP is a rimless round and are not interchangeable. The 32 S&W long is interchangeable with the 32 Colt long which is also known as the 32 Colt New Police. You should be able to find some 32 S&W long. It is more common than the Colt ammo.

You " can fire 32acp in a .32 colt ". Accuracy will be poor, but will work in a pinch. I fired some through a .327 fed with no issues. Like stated accuracy will not be as good and extraction might need to be done with a pencil, yet it will safely work.

Yup. I have done it too. Guy handed me an old H&R revolver at the shooting range some years back and asked me to try it out. Missed a pop can 5 out of 6 shots at 15 yards. Not too impressed with it except that recoil was very pleasant. He too was shooting some .32 ACP in it and was using a pen to poke out the empties with.

And if you can find any regular .32 S&W will work fine too. Probably harder to find than the .32 Long stuff is though.

Something to add........... Most of the old iver johnson .32 cal belly guns are chamber in .32 long colt. Most folks fire the .32 smiths in em, which is fine, but they where designed for the heel type bullets of the original colt loadings. These guns are on the weak side, and I would NOT RECCOMEND firing the .32acp's in them. The .32acp generates about a thousand to two thousand more CUP then the .32 colt or S&W loadings and might be a little to much for these type guns. For S&W revolvers and colt police positives your good to go in guns in good condition.
