338 lapua action?

I am interested in this cartridge and am starting to think about purchasing an action for this rifle build. I am thinking about doing this on the somewhat cheep, (for a 338 lapua.) Does anyone know if savage would sell one of their 338 lapua actions? Does anyone know of an alternative to the savage action that won't cost as much and I would be able to assemble? Thanks for the thoughts.
 
sounds like you may be set on savage, but if your not, I pulled my 300wm barrel off my 700LA and used that (action) for my 338NM, added a very VERY heavy contour 1:9.3 Broughton barrel and its game on.

Its a 338AX (Lapua mag Imp). Its built on a XP100 action. The barrel is 18.5" with a Kirby Allen muscle brake. It throws a 300 grn bullet at 2700fps.

Kirby Allen built it. This is actually Ernie Biships mine will be done in about 2 weeks.

Ill find the post on recoil video. Ernie is even free handing it.
 
Nice rifle I like the stock is the stock an AI ? Did you buy a new bolt or work over the stock one did go with a sako extracter ? I'm planing a build myself I would like to know the details of your build that's a great rifle

Stock is a KMW Sentinel, yes I bought a PTG with the M16 extractor.
 
I started researching the 338 norma mag. I like what I see. I really think I am going to head in this direction when the time comes.
 
First time I shoot one. I was sort of disappointed. Thought I was going to break my wrist and it bearly kicked.

I feel that building one from scratch will cost as much/maybe more as just buying the Savage one from a dealer.

It will cost more, but it will shoot better. In my mind this is my plan. Rem 700 mag action probably blued, manners t5a stock, some type of detach box mag system, obermeyer 5r barrel probably around 26", over sized bolt knob. I am going to look into www.accuracyunlimited.com build it. There is other stuff but I think that is about the basics. I think it will be the 338 norma mag.

Its all in the shooter behind the gun IMO. Maybe it will shoot better with a custom bbl, but if the person behind it can't do the job without strapping it to any kind of a rest its going to reflect downrange of course as we all know.
