I'm going to New Mexico in October for my first elk hunt and I am looking for some good elk loads for my Browning BBR (Browning bolt rifle)in .338 Win Mag, any info would be appreciated.

This straight enough? These are 2 (3 shot) groups with different powder weights . 200 gr Nosler B-tips @100 yrds.

I agree with crapshoot. I've got a Rem700SS and it loves the 200gr Nosler BT and the Win 230gr Failsafe. I use Win brass and IMR 4831. I've shot elk with both loads and they are both good but that 230gr failsafe is really nasty. I took one thru both shoulder bones and it still exited - talk about penetration. That's what you want on elk size game. Good luck Dan

I'll let ya'll know how they work on Black bear here in a couple of months. Maybe white tail too. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

200 Gr. Nosler BT./ 69Gr. IMR 4350 Powder./ 3.345" OAL /Finished Load WLR primers. Win. Brass. Winchester model 70.
Of course, start low and work up.

I use a Barnes 250 Grain X bullet in my 338 Weatherby Vanguard. I would stay away from Nosler Ballistic Tips for hunting big game. They are great for punching paper or varmints, however when it comes to shooting something that is not already dead, they leave alot to be desired. Simply put, they tend to expand too rapidly and lack penetration on big game animals. A friend of mine shot a whitetail in the front shoulder with a 30 caliber 150 grain B.T. It never made it through the deer. Jacket core separation. The deer ran 150 yards, before it was shot by his father on another stand. Elk are as hard to put down as a whitetail, if not harder. A better choice would be the Nosler Partition.

I agree with alot of what was said here. The .338 bal-tips have a much thicker jacket and were designed for hunting large game. With that being said, I do believe there are Much better choices of bullets. But..... , im still gunna give em a try . /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I ordered some 210gr Nosler Partition and some 225gr Nosler Accubond, now to find the powder-bullet combo that shoots well out of my gun, but that's the fun part.

Nosler makes two different BT bullets, a "varmint" and a "hunting" BT. The hunting BT has a much thicker jacket. That said, I agree with what others have said; a premium hunting bullet would be a better choice. There is a pretty good selection available now.

Try a 250 grain Hornady Spire Point, with 69.0 grains IMR 4831, Win Cases, Fed 215 primers. In my Model 70 it's a fantastic mouse to moose load. Great on whitetails, and black bears. Super accurate out of my rifle. Start a little lower at first, but I get no pressure signs whatsoever.
