.357 mag vs .38 in a 2" barrel

Hi,
Is there any advantage to a .357 mag. vs a .38 +P in a 2" barrel revolver?
What I mean is will all of the powder in a magnum case burn in that short of a barrel? I just don't see how it can but someone on here is sure to know more about this than I do. I'm looking to buy a concealed carry revolver and I am trying to decide if I should spend the extra money to get the magnum. I'm specifically looking at the Ruger SP101, 2-1/4 barrel.
Thanks, Mike

I have to agree with your line of thought. Also when you take into consideration recoil and noise I can't see the advantage of the 357. If I recall correctly the average distance in a self-defense gun battle is 7.5 feet.

Remember if you should ever have to use this weapon in self-defense,if you survive the gunfight then you have to defend yourself in court, in many cases.
I would rather have the jury hear that I used a 38 than a terrible 357 MAGNUM.

Just some thoughts, for what they're worth.

I'm sure there will be a great variance of opinions on this

Try and go to the range and shoot a box of each. You will definitley notice the difference. If you would have to use the gun in a self defense scenario I think the +p will do just fine. There is also the possibility that if you would have to use it you could have to follow up with a second or third round you would be able to control the weapon better. Also you may have to use one hand, Your wife or girlfriend may have to use it.A lot of folks will say that bigger is better , but I think shot placement will be the key, especially close quarters which will probably be a point and shoot scenario. The noise from a .357 round will be deafening which could actually hurt you instead of benefit you .

Not a whole lot of difference unless you roll your own. Then you might gain a little by using a faster burning powder than factory 357's use. I also use the 135gr. Gold Dot that was intened for lower velocity out of a short barrel.

As far as muzzle jump and follow on shots, here is what I've done to both of my 640's. They are both ported, and it sure keeps the muzzle down.

BTW, I only carry the one with the gold trim when I am wearing gold earrings!

.357's chamber and fire .38 Special also... Now, do I like .357 snubby guns? Not really, they have a terrible muzzle blast and are unpleasant in a lightweight short barrel gun. But just in case you ever NEED more horsepower, you have the option. But even a .38 Special will act like a Magnum when using the Buffalo Bore +P loads. Factoring in the Buffalo Bore stuff it’s a draw, leaving that out then why not get the .357 and adjust your loads for the mission that particular day?

They are. They fit big hands without being bulky. I really like them, they are Badgers.

Actually I have three more sets on other S&W's.
