GREAT FALLS -- A 4-year-old Ulm boy who was mauled by a dog died Friday morning after undergoing emergency surgery, Cascade County Sheriff David Castle said.

Dominic Giordano was playing in his aunt and uncle's backyard Thursday afternoon with their two Rottweilers. When his mom checked on him about 10 minutes later she saw one of the dogs on top of him, said Sgt. Bob Rosipal.

"He was unconscious and it appeared that he had been dragged all over the yard," Castle said.

The boy, who had extensive injuries to his neck, torso and legs, "was in surgery for quite a few hours" and died early Friday, the sheriff said. The boy, his mother, Emma, and sister were staying with Emma's brother.

"The suspect dog has been euthanized, per request of the family," Castle said. "We're still investigating this.

"It doesn't at this time appear there was any prior history of the dog being vicious," he said

I understand why people go for these "bone crusher dogs", the Rotties, Pit Bulls etc.

But a good alarm system and "good dog" keeps children safer.

Lovers of these breeds, "Throw your rocks" .... but facts is facts.

Poor kid!

This is so sad....

People don't think when they are playing with a dog and they teach them to play "tug-a-war"!! This allows a dog any breed the green light to tug on clothes!

A young girl died recently from her dog strangling her by her scarf!

A dog, should NOT be allowed to play this game.

People think it is cool to get a strong dog on the end of a rope or cloth and drag the dog around....think?? (Then the dog is dragging a kid, and thinking its playing)

I have a pit, I have had people come and want to play that with her, NO WAY, she is NOT allowed to do this.

very, very sad....

I never thought about the "tug of war" link.

About twenty years ago I had a pup that I could not get my Mom's older Norweigin Elk Hound to accept. That older dog even rejected me for bringing the Border Collie/Dingo pup into the equation!

A bit of tug of war with a sock and the pup was "in like Flinn".

But I agree that imprinting needs rethinking!

...and if we want to take it one step further....think about a pack of wolves or coyotes feeding on a deer carcass...they seem to "enjoy" the tugging and pulling and it is like a "social thing" so I can see how you got the pooches to get along, you talked dog!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I feel for the family.

But what does this have to do with Lions, Bears, or Houndsmen? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

THANK YOU!!! You can talk about temperments and you can talk about owners. "Parents should never leave kids alone with pets." WHAT??? (that is not addressing you PredatorSniper, I realize you said young children) A boy and his dog is as American as apple pie. My dog went with me everywhere! These "bone crushers" have certain capabilities that make them liabilities. Let's face it, 99% of the people who own this kind of dog share certain types of personality traits. There are other things that make the owners similar, but that can be different from place to place depending on where one lives. I hate lumping Rots in with Pits because they are such majestic animals. But the bite potential is there and with a much larger animal. Pits, aside from hunting hogs, are worthless. A lot of other dogs bite, but I have never heard of one that can lock down and do the kind of damage these dogs do.

Well, I have shown a button of mine, I guess. These stories never seem to quit. I have had more than one horrible experience with pits. I know....someone will say "my kids crawl all over my pitbull" and "I'd trust my pit with a kitten" I wonder if the Giordanos ever said something like that?

That is exactly the purpose of sharing this story,a reminder to those who claim that thier rotts are the nicest animals ever and would never harm thier children,Im sure thats what this family said before thier son was dead.

I have 90# Rot/Pit mix, nicest lovable baby, just loves attention. I never let my grandson in the yard alone with him, nor does the wife go in the yard unless I'm there. You want to talk about strangers, no way are they gonna survive in the yard alone. The meter readers etc. schedule with me to come read the meters, check the septic system etc, I chain him then and stand with him, man he gets upset with them in the yard, his hair stands up, he pulls tight on the chain (and it ain't no small chain). I really don't think he would bite, just wants to check them out and sence he can't get it done he get's upset, all the same they ain't trusting the dog and I don't want any problems so I take every precaution I can to protect everyone and my dog. They can sence fear and it triggers agressive behavior, never ever turn your back to one and run, that is the biggest mistake so many people make, second biggest mistake is to stare them down, don't lock eye contact they see that as an agressive act towards them and will attack.

Some people just have to learn the hard way. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

it just sad that so many children have to be injured before people relize that thier lovable pet is capable of doing this.

My sister raised rottweilers for years and claimed that they were just big babies. That is untill the day that a female she had for years just about killed her. She doesnt have any rottweilers anymore. They are killers and I hate em.

I'm not saying I think people shouldn't have the right to own them, I just don't see why anyone would want to take the chance of being the owner of one. Almost all of the maulings I hear about are either Rots or Pits. I think a lot of people own these dogs for ego reasons. Try telling a young child who encounters one these dogs barking at him, not to turn and run.

Very sad indeed. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

According to this article, all male dogs should just be neutered and it would cause a dramatic decline in this sort of thing. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

"FATAL DOG ATTACKS"
The Stories Behind the Statistics
by Karen Delise

THE STATISTICS - FATAL DOG ATTACKS IN THE U.S. FROM 1965 - 2001 *

The study covers 431 documented human fatalities from a dog attack.

Location of Attack
25% of all fatal attacks were inflicted by chained dogs
25% resulted from dogs loose in their yard
23% occurred inside the home
17% resulted from attacks by dogs roaming off their property
10% involved leashed dogs or miscellaneous circumstances

Number of Dogs
68% of all fatal attacks were inflicted by a single dog
32% was the result of a multiple dog attack

Victim Profile
79% of all fatal attacks were on children under the age of 12
12% of the victims were the elderly, aged 65 - 94
9% of the victims were 13 - 64 years old

The age group with the highest number of fatalities were children under the age of 1 year old; accounting for 19% of the deaths due to dog attack. Over 95% of these fatalities occurred when an infant was left unsupervised with a dog(s).

The age group with the second-highest number of fatalities were 2-year-olds; accounting for 11% of the fatalities due to dog attack. Over 87% of these fatalities occurred when the 2-year-old child was left unsupervised with a dog(s) or the child wandered off to the location of the dog(s).

Boys aged 1 - 12 years old were 2.5 times more likely to be the victim of a fatal dog attack than girls of the same age.

Breeds Involved
Pit Bull and Pit-bull-type dogs (21%), Mixed breed dogs (16%),
Rottweilers (13%), German Shepherd Dogs (9%), Wolf Dogs (5%),
Siberian Huskies (5%), Malamutes (4%), Great Danes (3%),
St. Bernards (3%), Chow Chows (3%), Doberman Pinschers (3%),
other breeds & non-specified breeds (15%).

Reproductive Status of Dogs
Overwhelmingly, the dogs involved in fatal dog attacks were unaltered males.
From 2000-2001 there were 41 fatal dog attacks. Of these, 28 were attacks by a single dog and 13 fatalities were caused by multiple dogs.

Of the 28 single dogs responsible for a fatal attack between 2000-2001;
26 were males and 2 were females. Of the 26 males, 21 were found to be intact (the reproductive status of the remaining 5 males dogs could not be determined).

States with the Most Fatalities - 1965-2001
California, 47; Texas, 32; Alaska, 26; Florida, 22; New York, 19; Michigan, 18; Illinois, 18; North Carolina, 17; Georgia, 16.

While at times informative, statistics on fatal dog attacks can also be misleading. For example, a number of cases were a Pit Bull, Rottweiler or GSD were counted as causing a human fatality were in reality the direct result of gross human negligence or criminal intent (i.e. discarding a newborn in the yard where the dogs were kept, or cases of extremely emaciated animals, or cases were the dog was ordered or encouraged to attack the victim).

This study was conducted not to determine which breeds of dogs caused fatalities, but rather to examine the circumstances and events that precipitated an attack. Knowing how many Pit Bulls or Rottweilers caused a human fatality has little applicable value, only when examining each case individually can we hope to gain insight into the HUMAN and CANINE behaviors that contributed to these tragic events.

The preceding information and statistics are excerpts from the book:

I love my guns, no doubt about it. Look at these stats.
According to these, our guns are more likely to kill our children than our dogs.
There were 431 documented deaths due to dogs from 1965-2001, but look at the deaths to our children on our guns.
If we are gonna always touch on sensitive stuff Nonya, let's go all the way. You hate every living canine on the earth it seems......I wonder how well you like your guns.
This is the third discussion you have started on "bad" dogs in three months. Let's start one on our guns and see if that hits closer to home.

Here's the stats:

Facts On Gun Deaths In The USA
The Americans value their constitution and the U.S. Constitution's Second Amendment deals with the right to bear arms. Here is the price that ordinary Americans are paying for the privilege

- 8 children a day die in murders, suicides and accidents involving guns

- since John F. Kennedy was assinated more Americans have died from gunshot wounds at home than died in all the wars of the 20th century

- Osama bin Laden would need at least nine twin towers like attacks each year to equal what Americans do to themselves every year with guns.

- Murder rates in LA, NY and Chigago were approaching the hightest in the world (30 per 100,000) until moves were made in late 20th century to restrict access to guns to teenagers. (The NRA wants these moves reversed)

If Osama bin Laden had had more sense, instead of launching a terrorist attack, he would simply have provided financial backing to the NRA.

It is all very well to spout figures but the fact that this post seems to attract so much attention means that I thought I had better update it and support it with some hard facts.

Here are the latest gun death figures for 2001, which are the latest available, as published by the CDC (Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, the US government agency that monitors these things.) Rate column is deaths per 100,000 of population.

Like I said, I love my guns and nobody will take them from me. I like my dogs too. I like my vehicle too even though a bunch of folks die each year in auto accidents.

It's about being responsible......BOTTOM LINE.

Bopeye I dont hate anything in the wild, get off your horse,if i hate anything its failed managment plans that take away our hunting rights and remove us from the foodchain. You are the guy calling them "BAD DOGS" and using the word "HATE",get a life.I pasted an article from the local newspaper, thats it.
