So anyone Shoot the V-Max's out of a 1:8 Twist.
I shoot them out of 1:9 and get 1/2" groups

So just wondering if they will hold together in a 1:8 traveling from 3,100 to 3,600 FPS.

I ask because I am picking up an RRA AR Varmint Upper
with 1:8 Twist

hylander, I would say give'em a try...It couldn't hurt. Just keep in mind that it is "Possible" that the 40's will fragment before impact. I have shot 55's out of my 1/9 with zero problems so I wouldn't imagine you would see any different.

MyTikka with 1/8 twist shoots the 40's very well. Ive taken quite a few coyotes with them too havent had a runner go more than about 25 yds. Good luck !

The 55's shoot well in my 22-250 with a 1in8 at a higher velocity than you listed. So the 55's should be OK. I have no experience with the 40's in that twist, but I would think that you might have a stability problem, but you never know.

However I bought the 1in8 for the 75 A-Max's. And that bullet really performs in a 1in8. Tom.

I have the RRA predator pursuit (1 in 8) and shoot a lot of 55 grains through it. Shoots the VMAX and the Nosler BT very nicely both in 55 grain. It also shoots the 60 grain VMAX and Nosler BT about the same. Nice little ragged holes at 100 yards.

My 20" RRA loves the 55 gr. I can't seem to find any 60 gr. My gun also loves the 69 gr SMK. This is a 1/8 barrel. I am going to load some Nosler BT this week when I get some in either 55 or 60 gr.

I've shot 55 VMaxes from an 8 twist at 3250 fps with good results. They were consistently .6" shooters. I had no luck at all with 40's, but OTOH, I didn't try real hard to work up a load with them. I'd say my average with them was 1.25", but like I said, I didn't spend much time trying to work up a load with them.

Mine loves the 60 grain Nosler BT the best. The 55 shot great as well.. But the 60's were one on top of another. I shot a 10 shot group at 100 yards taking my time and letting the barrel cool and it was under 3/4".. It was one solid hole in the target the size of a nickel.. Plus those 60's are bad little bullets on some dogs..

My Tikka T-3 shoots 40 grain V-Max and 40 grain Nolser B.T.'s with equal excellent accuracy.

I pair either with RL-10X for spectacular results.

My 1:7 shoots 50's and 55's into bugholes with no issues...

Fast twist = frangible bullet = pretty unbelievable performance

I settled on 60's however....

Same here on the RL-10,and 40 VMAX Rem 7 1/2's. Two 1-8 RRA PP. and a few 1-9 Stevens.

I think I'm around 25.7 gr. of RL-10X in my 223 40 gr. VMAX load. 4198 works well also for me, especially with 30gr. Bergers in 223.

I shoot hornady 40 grain v maxes out of my sako 75 with a 1:8 twist , chronographed at 3720 ft/sec, they shoot well ..got a greycrow 2 days ago at 306 yards{lasered}!
using 27.7 grains of benchmark!

I've used the 40 grain v-maxes for a few years in a single shot NEF and now a Model-1 .223 1:8 twist and the 40's shoot great. I've never had problems with it keeping coyotes down I have yet to have a coyote get away.

I Agree with CJ.. I use the 40's out of the Tikka with 1/8, and it really works well. Squirrels turn into jigsaw puzzles, and Coyotes go down. Longest runner was about 30 yds. Good luck ! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
