40 S&W Carbine

I just bought a new High Point 40 S&W Carbine with intentions of using it to hunt dogs up here in Maine. I was just curious to see if anyone has used one before, or has any experience with them. I know the 40 is accurate up to 100 yards, and I own other hi-point pistols, and I think they are great for the price. Any feedback would be great...

Thanks /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

I can say that have delt with a few people that have had the pistols. In my line of work as a police officer im glad they had one. It jamed on a person at the moment of truth for him and I was glad at that point if you know what I mean. I would not trust my life to with it. Ihave been cut by a hog before also and im not sure a 40cal is your best bet, maybe a back up to a biggr round or a bow. I would also be careful shooting the 40 at a 100 yrds. Dont get me wrong a 40 is a great cal probly the best there is for what its used for. It lacks the down range energy for a hog. I my opinion if you want a hog gun get a SKS or a AK variant. The ammo is cheap and it close to a 30-30. You can evenfind it in soft poin for hunting. The carbine would be ok if you were real close, or for a truck gun. Hope this helps and I did not offend anyone. I belive that if have to put my life on the line I want the bet no matter the cost.

thanks for the feed back Keener, This carbine is mainly going to be a truck gun, but I said I was hunting Dogs (coyotes) not Hogs. Unfortunately we do not have any hogs in Maine. But I do hear that they are slowly moving my way. I would love to go on a hog hunt. I hear you have plenty in Texas. My old man goes down you way hog hunting once a year.

As far as Hi-Point goes. I own a few of them (mostly just plinkers, and range guns) I have never had one jam or even misfeed on me. And that's after 1,000's of rounds being put through them. Maybe I just have good luck, or maybe I just take care of my guns better than most. They have been very dependable for me, Don't get me wrong, my Hi-Point 40 s&w Shirley doesn't compare to my Smith 40 M&P. But it holds it own. And you can't beat the price and the lifetime guarantee.

sorry for the misread playing with my 7mo old and the site. it would work well for yotes. I have taken several with my G22 40cal. if you want a hog or 2 come down I pretty sure i can get you one.

At 100 yards I really haven't been impressed with the 995 or 4095. They're great close up, but then again a shotgun loaded with #4 Buck or some Dead-Coyote Ts is even better. Go with a shotgun or grab a cheap bolt action like Mossy's ATR-100 or a Stevens 200. The Hi-Point should live where it belongs, next to the bed or rattling around under the truck seat.

My brother had a Hi-Point carbine in .9mm that would make a nice little coyote gun I always thought. He sold it without even askin me if I wanted it too. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
To answer your question I would probably limit myself to 50 yard shots at the most with one of those.I havent ever done any shootin with those carbines from any further than that so I cant really say how accurate they are out to 100 yards. Those sights are kind of tricky so If I were to get one I would probably put a red dot scope on it if possible? It might help out with the longer shots but I dont know for sure. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif
It would make it alot easier to get on the coyote your shootin at Im almost positive. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

The Hi-point Carbine actually holds a nice group at 100 yards. I was surprised at how well it did. I have a scope on it already and I have a red dot that I can throw on top of it as well.

I have plenty of good coyote guns in my cabinet, but I was just curious to see if anyone had any experience with the hi-point. Its a sweet shooting gun, believe it or not, and it is super light. So I figured it would make a great dog gun...
