i live in illinois and i see a lot of coyotes in the corn field but they are out there a ways. i was just trying to think of a setup that wouls take care of this situation. just cant deceide what gun to go with. any thoughts?

You could get a .223 Rem., heavy barreled Savage. Send it to Fred Moreo of Sharp Shooters Supply, have him ream out the chamber for the .22-243 Ackley Improved, replace the bolt head and your in business with a very long ranged varmint rifle. A friend did just that and the 1 in 9 twist stablizes the 69 to 75 grain bullets well, with muzzle velocities (depending on the bullet) in excess of 3500 fps.

However, a lot of guys around here who hunt coyotes with dogs have preferred a 6 X .284 for shooting the shots at coyotes out in the middle of a corn field.

Have to agree with CatShooter.

A 243 would do all you need. I have an 8 twist 22-250 that is getting 3300 with 75Amax's out of 22"es of barrel that does a fair to middlin' job at those distances, but now you are talking custom prices vs. factory prices. Same thing with the savage 22-243 thing. It has alot to do with the nut behind the trigger, and a factory 243 will do what you are asking.

Sure...

A 308 Win loaded with the Hornady 110 V-Max at 3,300+ fps will turn them into...
... well you might need a sponge to pick them up /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

7mm Remington Mag, with a 120 g. bullet. That oughta fill the bill.

There ya' go - just what's needed for a 30 pound doggie???

The problem at 600 yards is still having the muzzle velocity to reliably expand the bullets while retaining enough foot pounds of energy hopefully over 400 lbs. to do the job. Almost all 22 center fires are all done well before 600 on coyote size game it isn't like shooting PD's or punching holes in paper.

Unless you want to be shooting one of the big barrel burning 22's just move on up to say .243 or 6MM Something.

Easy off the shelf factory rifle chamberings to consider would be 243, 6mm, or 25-06. Those 3 will do what you ask quite easily. They can be had in factory varmint rifles and can be quite accurate when properly loaded.

I would use the 87g vmax in the 243/6mm's and use either the 85-100g NBT in the 25-06. Those will kill coyotes easily past 600 yards with a good hit.

As long as your bullet is still moving along 1500-1600fps, thats enough to make a varmint, or ballistic tip bullet expand. Run some numbers on a ballistics program and see what you like.

I'd try something radical... like getting closer, or, calling them closer.

This is no time to bring any kind of logic to the table....Laffin' /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Daammmm........what a novel idea, Gary. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Only problem is that would be WAY too easy a solution for us hunter types, you know. If we can't throw money at it as a solution, then we ain't interested. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I guess it depends on whether you want to be a hunter or a sniper.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Most of the calibers the others have mention would all work, but I have to ask.. have you ever shot at 400 to 600 yards? That is a very long range to be hitting a coyote. It is one thing to shoot that far off of a bench and hit your target, and another to shoot from a truck or even shooting sticks. So I would say stalk closer, but it is a good reason to buy another rifle!
