410/45 handgun

My wife wants a handgun to carry around the farm to shoot skunks, rats, etc. I've been looking at the 410's. Am wondering if any of you have experience with them. Also, there seems to be a difference of opinion about kick. For my wife, the less the better. Or is there some other option. We have shotguns and rifles and other handguns, but she's convinced that shot is better than a single bullet. Would .22 birdshot kill a skunk. Any help? Thanks.

I'm only going on what I've read in previous posts, but the "Judge" doesn't have real good ratings for accuracy...Having shot a couple of .45 LC handguns in the past, don't expect light recoil out of the cartridge..

Most barrels with rifling, do not give good accuracy with bird/snake shot past about 10 feet, so don't be surprised if you experience that....

the .410 is the best for killing power,if you could get the longer barrel the recoil is a little less.they are loud also.you can get shotshells for the .357 also but for skunks you have to be too close.

From the patterns I've seen fired from The Judge, the little lady would be "danger close" in order to kill skunks.

I've got a Judge and thank God it was a gift and I didn't spend money on it. It is a paper weight. Get her a Ruger MKII or MKIII and put a red dot sight on it. That should do the trick. No need to get closer than 25yds to a skunk with a Ruger no matter how bad a shot you are. Mine is easily minute of groundhog at 50yds.

The Judge is pretty big to carry around every day. A light weight .22 revolver would be much better. A Ruger BearCat would go unnoticed on a belt or in a pocket until needed.

Got a Judge. No to shooting skunks with it. You will get
sprayed before you can hit the skunk enough times to kill it.

A Snake Charmer might be a better bet or a Mossberg 500 with
a short barrel and maybe a pistol grip.

My Judge is more a conversation piece/paperweight and was the
wifes bed gun until today.
