*** WARNING ! This is not a calling coyotes post. ***
Got a text earlier this winter from a friend of mine, it was a picture of a box of 3" 000 buckshot in .410 at the local gun shop. Message said something like.. I almost bought you these to slow you down and give me a chance to kill more coyotes while hunting with you. I said if you are buying I'll play ! No ammo showed up ...
About 2 weeks later we both was at the store and I said now is your chance, wise guy......still no ammo bought. Hmmm.....
I gave him an even harder time about it then. Around a week later he hands me a box of .410 ammo in 000 buckshot !
So.....
Yesterday (Saturday) he text me that a friend of his had seen a coyote . The property the coyote was on is a farm field with a pine and grass windbreak plus a small pond and a large county ditch that is full of trees and brush. Perfect place for the 410 challenge !
I got the guys and girls together for little coyote action. Set up a few shooters on the ends of the ditch, plus 2 shooters near the grass area where the coyotes like to bed. I found the tracks in some very crunchy ice covered snow and started tracking. Wasn't long maybe 20 minutes of "bird dog'n" the trail and I heard a shotgun blast followed by a couple more ! I see a flash of brown running by out of 410 range headed for the ditch. I pushed westward towards a shooter ,but his wind was blowing at us. Soon I heard ice cracking and water splashing ,catch movement coming back my direction in the bottom of the ditch ! Raising my old double barrel slow and easy preparing for the shot ! 5 pellets of 000 buck in the air, the coyote flinched, but kept going. Tripped the second charge of 5 pellets and it was out of sight. Reloaded and seen a very promising blood trail in the snow ! 20-30 yards later I see it bedded up in the brush. Sent a couple more shots and down it rolls in the water. I holler up at my friend Andy, coyote down ! Challenge complete !
Grin....
PS. Don't try this at home kids !
