410 slugs?

The local gun shop had some 410 slugs on sale so I grabbed some up. Any idea how well or if they will do for yotes. If they will do any idea on range?

Depends... If you're talking about the old style Foster slug and a smoothbore barrel accuracy and power will most likely limit you to about 40 yards or less. The old slugs were 1/5 ounce, something like 88 grains, nearly roundball in form, and at low velocity of less than 1,300 fps. I would suspect this will leave you a tracking job even with a good hit. I doubt you'd get a drop em' right there performance.

There actually have been some new advances in .410 slugs, the newest versions are heavier 1/4 ounce and at increased velocities of nearly 1,800 fps. Even at this power level you're still talking less than 80 yard effective ranges. Most likely the accuracy would be a bigger range limitation than power with the latest offerings.

I wouldn't get too excited about the .410 for a coyote getter. Not a real dynamic little number.

i wouldnt fool with it.
the 410 is way too popular.........some view it as a starter shotgun (it isnt) and some seem to think its just the ticket for deer (it isnt).

IMHO a 410 makes agreat tomato stake.

O_H

The .410 fills the bill for a low recoil upland game hunting gun with patterns that open quickly regardless of the choke. Rabbits, quail, squirrels, woodcock, and other small game at 10 to 25yds. would be the niche it will fill the best. The .410 is not a good deer slug or buckshot gun.

Try shooting the slugs at the distance GC suggested and see if the accuracy is acceptable.

I tried patterning a .410 a couple of months ago with slugs. Bought a bunch of the stuff. At 25 yards it was ok with most ammo I bought. Moved out to 50 yards and my groups were slightly bigger than a pie tin at that range. Had a buddy shoot it too. Couldnt make it shoot at 50 yards. Keep it under 25 and you might have a chance.

PimC.....yeah, I figured you knew better re. deer.
Wasnt trying to imply that you thought it was OK for deer.
I see a bunch of kids carrying the things during deer shotgun season here in Ohio(not on our property).
If the recoil is that bad with a 20, then wait a year, I say.

Id stay away from it for coyotes.
Have you ever shot slugs with a bead sight?
It can be tricky and it sure aint a good way to get a quick sight picture, IMHO.

Ive never shot slugs with a bead sight and recoil is not a problem at 28 6' 210pounds another year wouldnt help any. I just picked them up cause they were on sale and wondered how they would do but if 25yrds is all I will get for coyote then they will stay on the shell until I find another use for them. Thanks for the info.

410 slugs are a lot of fun with groundhogs that have taken up residence under a building. I have used them alot out of my Savage 24 in 22lr/410 combo. Used it first when my 22 misfired and the ghog poked his head out a little further at the click. What an effect. I highly recommend a gun with rifle sights as the shooting a slug with a bead is doable, but hard to be repeatable. Give them a try this coming spring/summer if you get the chance. It is a lot of fun.

I guess you have a long .410 or short tomatos.

I always thought a .410 was either a mistake for a kid trying to be effective or a show off stunt for a person who could make it work. Have to admit I don't know since I've never owned or used one.

my .410 is a great rabbit gun if you can get an open shot, through brush forget it. but its the worst slug shooter ever ya cant hit a coffe can at 30 yds.i'd really like to see any thats good for 60-80.i bought a bunch on sale too for a buck a box my boys had a great time shootin them too lol. for cheap shootin at yotes i'd rather have my .22 reevolver, i know i could hit the yote if it was the length of my .410 away lol

Like GC says you'll have more limitation because of accuracy then power shoot it at 50 yards and see how it does keep adding 10 yards tell it ain't good.
