Which powder is best for the 222, IMR4198 or H4198? The only 3 powders I have now that might work is X-Terminator, Pro Varmint, & IMR8208. Any experience with these in a 222. I probably want to shoot 40 Berger's but maybe 52 Berger's, I have plenty. Thanks,
Jim D

Imr 4198 shot well out of my mod 722 222 that was with 50, 55 vmax and 52 match kings. I played around with 40 grain bullets and Rel 7 worked really well with the 40gn sierra flat base hp. The 40g vmax bt is the only bullet this rifle didn't like. The other powder that I use is h322 its my goto with the 50 gn stuff.

Either 4198 should work well, almost every load book has data for the 4198's and the 222. I used 2230/x-terminator(from the Lyman book) for my hunting loads and Benchmark for target loads.

I use IMR 4198 in my Savage 340 and 50 gr SBK's. Produces 1 inch groups at 100 yards, that's good enough for me given the less than ideal trigger on those guns. It's a sub 200 yard gun anyhow so I don't need a 1 hole load.

IMR 4198 is still the velocity king of Hodgdon's powders according to their online loading manual FWIW. 8208, H4198 and the new CFE BLK more or less tie for second. IMR 4198 was always an old standby for the triple duece.

I have used 4198 and Xterminator and while liking both I only use Xterminator now because it meters better and is a lot cleaner burning, also works well with 40g VMax out of my Savage 12 1 in 12 twist!
