45-70 Reloading

I've been reloading for more years than I'd like to admit, and I have just started loading that old great 45-70.

I understand that this cartridge headspaces on its mouth. The spec OAL brass length is 2.105". Do I have to worry about pressure when/if my brass exceeds this length?

Actually, I believe the 45-70 headspaces off of the rim, not the mouth.
If your cases become too long, you could run into a couple problems, excessive pressure being one of them.
The simple fix to that is trim them when they get too long.

That's where my confusion comes in. I was told by a guy on another Site that they headspace on the mouth, but I thought, like you, that they headspaced on the rim.

the 45-70 head spaces on the rim. Just think about it. Almost all 45-70 loads are crimped. How could it head space on a crimp??

Length is usually not an issue in the 45-70. The brass needs to be trimmed for proper crimping, so why not just keep it to spec.??

Uniform crimping is a key to accuracy in the 45-70. either buy or cast a good 405 grain pill and let em fly. Tom.

I agree, Guys. I've been having great luck with Rem 405 grain jacketed. I may try some 405 grain cast bullets too.

THANKS---I APPRECIATE YOU GUYS' GUIDANCE!!

Ditto! I load them regularly and it is a very easy case to load .I have had very good luck with the 300gr HP remington produces. Gives good performance on the local whitetails!

I run 405 cast with 42 grains Rx 7 out of my Marlin GG at about 1600 fps with great accuracy and little to no leading..

That 405 gr. Remington is a wonderful inexpensive bullet. Works wonders on game too. I push them a little over 1,800 fps from a 22" barrel Marlin lever gun and they flat put the smack down on whatever they hit.
